Resumen en Inglés: ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze sociodemographic variables that may interfere with the clinical outcome of patients with voice or swallowing complaints. Methods: a descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study in which the medical records of patients above 18 years old treated at the Voice Clinic of the Speech-Language-Hearing Service of the Rio de Janeiro University Hospital between 2010 and 2018, were analyzed, including 81 medical records - 47 from females and 34 from males. Patients were divided according to three types of outcomes, namely: discharge, dismissal, and abandonment. The sociodemographic variables were sex, marital status, education level, income, whether they were occupational voice users, and the main complaint. The relative and absolute frequencies were calculated to analyze the results, and the Pearson´s chi-square test was used for inferential analysis (significance level of 5%). Results: sociodemographic variables were not significantly associated with the outcomes when the type of complaint (voice or swallowing) was not considered, separately. The study found a significantly higher frequency of patients with voice complaints who were discharged from speech-language-hearing therapy (p = 0.020). The higher frequency of such patients who abandoned therapy was significantly associated with an income of up to one minimum wage (p = 0.041). People with swallowing complaints were not significantly associated with sociodemographic variables. Conclusion: the most frequent outcome was treatment abandonment. In this study, low family income was associated with treatment abandonment by patients with voice complaints. Patients with swallowing complaints had a lower frequency of treatment abandonment and discharge than patients with voice complaints. |

ORIGINAL ARTICLES Electrical activity of the masseter and suprahyoid muscles and aspects of swallowing in children and adolescents with osteogenesis imperfecta Otavio, Andressa Colares da Costa Silva, Hilton Justino da Gomes, Erissandra Félix, Têmis Maria Resumen en Inglés: ABSTRACT Purpose: to characterize the electrical activation of the masseter and suprahyoid muscles at rest and during swallowing tasks, to compare it with clinical aspects of swallowing. Methods: a cross-sectional study, divided into mild osteogenesis imperfecta and moderate-to-severe osteogenesis imperfecta groups. Surface electromyography was performed on the masseter and suprahyoid muscles at rest and during swallowing tasks. The Orofacial Myofunctional Evaluation with Scores assessment form was used to assess clinical aspects of swallowing. Results: moderate-to-severe osteogenesis imperfecta participants presented a higher percentage of masseter activation than mild osteogenesis imperfecta ones. Regarding the clinical aspects of swallowing, the total sample presented 40.9% normal lip occlusion or with slight effort; 59.1% demonstrated tongue protrusion and 50% showed two other signs of atypical function. Furthermore, the higher the score for lip activity during swallowing, the lower the activation of the suprahyoid muscles at rest. Conclusions: the activation of the suprahyoid muscles while swallowing saliva and during consecutive swallows of liquid was similar, and activation during different tasks was higher in the moderate-to-severe osteogenesis imperfecta group. The better the labial myofunctional condition during swallowing, the lower the electrical activation of the suprahyoid muscles at rest. |

ORIGINAL ARTICLES Knowledge of speech-language pathologists regarding malocclusion, its preventive aspects, recognition, and need for referral Chapine, Yasmin Rodrigues do Prado Prado, Viviane de Oliveira Feres, Magda Ferreira, José Tarcísio Lima El-Bialy, Tarek Bastos, Silvia Helena Vieira Feres, Murilo Fernando Neuppmann Resumen en Inglés: ABSTRACT Purpose: this study aims to assess speech-language pathologists' knowledge of malocclusion, and to assess their perception in recognizing the need for referral of cases. Methods: a self-administered online questionnaire, aimed at assessing Brazilian speech-language pathologists' professional practices, orthodontic knowledge, and diagnostic skills, was applied. The collected data underwent descriptive analysis. Results: most respondents stated regularly contacting or referring patients to orthodontists; the most frequent reason for referral was related to the professional’s quality. Respondents indicated the importance of first occlusal evaluations at a very early age, and recognized the potential deleterious effects of oral habits. Most participants reported referring a normal occlusion, distocclusion, mesiocclusion, anterior open bite, deep overbite, and posterior crossbite cases, during the deciduous stage. For the mixed dentition cases, a substantial portion of the sample would refer a case without alterations, another one with mild incisal crowding, as well as deep overbite, Class II, Class III, anterior open bite, and posterior crossbite cases. Conclusion: professionals demonstrated a good knowledge of malocclusions. Perceptions regarding the need for early referral of Class III cases, anterior open bite, and posterior crossbite, in addition to the lack of an immediate approach for patients affected by mild space problems, were frequent. |
