Purpose:  the effects of the androgenic anabolic steroids on the voice, mainly in women were the basis to this research.

Methods:  it was done a bibliographic revision.

Results:  studies about the subject in the last 60 years were analyzed. We verified that the anabolic steroids were used in the treatment of several diseases, like mammary and ovarian cancer, problems with hormonal replacement in cases of post-menopausal syndrome, osteoporosis, growth difficulties, among others. However, the therapy for these problems caused changes, most of them irreversible, mainly in the voice of these patients.

Conclusion:  the age, the dosage, and time of use of these drugs were extremely important to the vocal changes. Vocal therapy has not yet been clarified and studied.
