Interdisciplinary management of Sjogren's syndrome: integrated impact on ocular and respiratory health

Objective:  To critically review current therapeutic strategies for Sjögren's syndrome (SS), emphasizing ocular and respiratory manifestations, and highlighting innovative interventions with clinical applicability.

Methods:  This is an integrative literature review based on the PICO strategy. A systematic search was conducted in the VHL, SciELO, MEDLINE, and LILACS databases, covering publications from 2020 to 2025. Controlled descriptors and free terms related to "Sjögren's Syndrome," "Interdisciplinary Approach," and "Ocular Manifestations" were used to identify relevant scientific evidence on the multidisciplinary management of the disease.

Results:  Evidence indicates that an interdisciplinary approach involving ophthalmology, rheumatology, and otolaryngology is central to effectively manage ocular and systemic manifestations of SS. Emerging interventions, such as liposomal formulations of baricitinib and, experimentally, intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy in cases of evaporative overlap, demonstrated promising clinical benefits, representing significant therapeutic advancements in disease control.

Conclusion:  Multidisciplinary collaboration combined with novel therapeutic strategies contributes to more effective SS management, resulting in substantial clinical improvement, enhanced ocular comfort, and significantly improved patient quality of life.
