Limitations of reanalyses for high latitudes of the southern hemisphere Setzer, Alberto Kayano, Mary

Abstract in English:

This paper presents a comparison of reanalyses results for air temperature at 1000 hPa and atmospheric pressure reduced to sea level at the high latitudes of the southern hemisphere, during the period of 1979-2000. The data used comprised three sets of reanalyses, NCEP-NCAR 1 and 2, and ECMWF/ERA-40. The differences between them become significant and increase from ~60º south, reaching particularly high values at the center of the Antarctic continent. Considering the average for the 22 years, the difference in temperature for the reanalyses in the extreme cases reached up to 12ºC in the autumn (March, April and May), and winter (June, July and (August), and for the reduced pressure, up to 30 hPa, in these same seasons. In the coastal Antarctic region the comparison with data from two surface weather stations indicated differences between the average seasonal temperatures actually measured, and those of the reanalyses. The most northern station, Bellinghausen (62º12' S e 058º56' W), presented smaller differences, up to 1.8ºC, and Mirny (66º33' S e 093º01' E), up to 4.5ºC; this is in agreement with the herein proposed increase of the differences according to the latitude. As a possible explanation for these differences among sets of reanalyses and between them and the measured surface data, we suggest: faulty quality control of the input data from Antarctica, and; the difference between the Antarctic atmosphere, particularly in the cases of extreme cold, with that of the standard atmosphere that is used globally to reduce pressure and temperature to other levels in the atmosphere. The magnitude of the differences reported has the potential to hamper the study of temporal series of meteorological data and of climatic variations for Antarctica

Blocking episodes in the southern hemisphere: comparasion between the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis and HADCM3 model Damião Mendes, Monica Cristina Cavalcanti, Iracema Fonseca De Albuquerque Trigo, Ricardo Machado Mendes, David Dacamara, Carlos Do Carmo Aragão, Maria Regina Da Silva

Abstract in English:

A comparison of blocking episodes for the Southern Hemisphere obtained from the Hadley Centre (HadCM3) model results and from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis for the period from 1960 to 2000, is discussed in this study. The definition of blocking is obtained by using an objective index based on two, 500 hPa geopotential height, meridional gradients. The seasonal cycle and preferential areas of occurrence are well reproduced by the model. Similar to the reanalysis results, the South Pacific and Oceania were the preferred regions of blocking occurrence. The frequency of blocking episodes simulated by the model was also similar to the observed, with higher blocking occurrences in the winter and beginning of spring (from June to September.
Mesoscale convective complexes in Rio Grande do Sul between October and December of 2003 and associated precipitation Viana, Denilson Ribeiro Aquino, Francisco Eliseu Burgobraga, Ricardo Ferreira, Nelson Jesus

Abstract in English:

This study investigates the occurrences of Mesoscale Convective Complexes (MCC) and the associated precipitation in the southernmost Brazilian state, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), from October to December of 2003. The identification of MCC events was done using ForTraCC. The MCC precipitation was based on the daily data of 31 local weather stations. Twenty-two MCC events were identified over RS during the three month study period, and this total, seven events occurred in October, seven in November and eight in December. Results point to an MCC associated precipitation average of 119 mm in October, 90 mm in November and 152 mm in December. The percentages for MCC precipitation averages, for the period, were 64% in October, 65% in November and 61% in December. The average accumulated volume of MCC precipitation for the three months was 361 mm (63%). This confirms that MCC events contributed significantly to the precipitation totals in RS, and were responsible for almost two thirds of the precipitation in RS, for the period.

Classification of meteorological systems and comparison of radar estimated precipitation to the measured by telemetric network in the high Tietê watershed Silva, Fabrício Daniel Dos Santos Pereira Filho, Augusto José Hallak, Ricardo

Abstract in English:

Estimated precipitation characteristics arising from 145.194 reflectivity fields, from 827 days, during the period from 1998 to 2003, obtained at the Weather Radar of São Paulo, were analysed. The events were classified according to the intensity of precipitation in Convectives and Stratiforms. Five types of morphologic systems were identified: Isolated Convection (CI), Maritime Breeze (BM), Squall Lines (LI), Dispersed Bands (BD), and Cold Fronts (FF). Convection events dominate in spring and summer and Stratiforms in the Autumn and Winter. CI and BM have occurred more frequently between October and March, while the cold fronts from April to September. Dispersed Bands occurred throughout the year, and the lines of instability did not occur only on June and July. A comparison between the telemetric measured precipitation and the Radar estimated one has been done, and a positive bias, of the Radar accumulations for 10, 30 and 60 minutes, was shown on the majority of cases. To integrate the precipitation estimations from the Radar to the telemetric network measurements, by means of an objective statistical analysis, the structures of spatial correlation, for rain accumulation during 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes for the five types of characterized systems, was obtained from the Radar precipitation fields. The average spatial correlation curves of all the precipitation events of each system were fitted to a sixth order polynomial function. The results indicate significant differences in the spatial structures of the correlation among the precipitation systems.

Deterministic and stochastic hydrological modeling applied to the Xingu river basin - Pará Lucas, Edmundo Wallace Monteiro Sousa, Francisco de Assis Salviano de Silva, Fabricio Daniel dos Santos Lucio, Paulo Sergio

Abstract in English:

Hydrologic modeling is an important tool for the planning and management of water resources use in river basins. In this work, a two-parameter monthly deterministic hydrologic model and the stochastic model, ARIMA, were applied to simulate the monthly runoff of the Xingu river basin in the State of Pará. The main objective of this work is to simulate the monthly runoff using the two models and to compare their results. The applied hydrological deterministic model has a simple structure and presented good results, but seems to be very sensitive to extreme precipitation events. The stochastic model ARIMA was able to capture the dynamic of the temporal series, presenting very satisfactory results for the simulation of the monthly runoff at the basin stations. Both models should be applied with caution during the rainy season, when extreme precipitation events and consequently peaks of runoff occur.

A study of intraseasonal precipitation dynamic downscaling coupled to rain-streamflow model at the alto-médio São Francisco hydrographic basin Lima, José Pedro Rebés Alves, José Maria Brabo

Abstract in English:

This study shows the use of rainfall dynamic hydroclimate downscaling coupled to the rain-streamflow hydrological model for the hydrographic basins named Cachoeira Manteiga and Porto da Extrema, localized at Alto-Médio São Francisco Basin in Minas Gerais State. The emphasis was to simulate the intraseasonal scale (monthly). The results suggest that the rainfall simulation can be used as input data to streamflow estimation models for periods of monthly scale, allowing a more rational usage of the surface water resources in the hydrographic basin studied. It is also suggested that the rainfall data simulation, corrected by the Probability Density Function (PDF) technique, is more efficient to estimate rainfall comparing to observed rainfall in the basin thus resulting in a better simulation of the basin flow outlet.

Estimation of solar radiation by mesoscale atmospheric modeling applied to the northeast Brazil region Menezes Neto, Otacilio Leandro De Costa, Alexandre Araújo Ramalho, Fernando Pinto

Abstract in English:

The use of renewable energy sources, like solar, wind and biomass is rapidly increasing in recent years, with solar radiation being a particularly abundant energy source over Northeast Brazil. Thus, the proper quantitative knowledge of the incoming solar radiation is of great importance for energy generation planning in Brazil, serving as basis for developing future projects of photovoltaic power plants and solar energy exploration. This work presents a methodology for mapping the incoming solar radiation at ground level on Northeast Brazil, using a mesoscale atmospheric model (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System - RAMS), calibrated and validated using the automatic surface stations network data from the Ceará State Foundation for Meteorology and Water Resources (Fundação Cearense de Meteorologia e Recursos Hídricos- FUNCEME). The results showed that the model presents systematic errors, overestimating surface radiation, but, after a proper statistical corrections, using a relationship between the model-predicted cloud fraction and the observed radiation at ground level and the estimated at the top of the atmosphere, a 0.92 correlation value, with a confidence interval of 13,5 W/m², is obtained for monthly data. Using this methodology, an estimated 215 W/m² annual average incoming solar radiation over Ceará is found (maximum in October: 260 W/m²).

Net radiation partition in Amazonian forest and transitional Amazonia-cerrado forest areas Andrade, Nara Luisa Reis de Aguiar, Renata Goncalves Sanches, Luciana Alves, Édina Cristina Rodrigues de Freitas Nogueira, José de Souza

Abstract in English:

In this work the seasonal behavior and the daily cycle of micrometeorological parameters and energy fluxes, in Amazonian forest (Rebio Jaru) and Transitional Amazonia-Cerrado forest (Maracaí Farm) is analyzed. The measurements were done by equipments installed in the micrometeorological towers of LBA project (Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia), one located near from Ji-Paraná city, RO (area of Amazonian forest) and other located near from Sinop city, MT (area of Transitional forest). The results analysis indicate the existence of a well defined seasonality with dry and wet seasons in both localities, which is reflected in the behavior of the precipitation, air humidity and temperature and, consequently, in the latent heat (λE) and sensible heat (H) fluxes. In the energy balance, the daily means show a different behavior of λE, in both areas, indicating more adaptation capacity of Amazonia forest to the dry period. The Rn/λE partition values showed similar seasonal behavior for both areas, with larger values for the wet season, decreasing for the dry season.

Comparison between wind profiles collected by SODAR and RADIOSONDES during the DRYTOWET-AMC/LBA experiment Santos e Silva, Cláudio Moisés Lyra, Roberto Fernando da Fonseca

Abstract in English:

The horizontal wind profiles measured by a SODAR and radiosondes during the DRYTOWET-AMC/LBA experiment are compared. The analysis were made considering three layers: from surface up to 500 m, from 500 up to 1000 m and from 1000 to 1500 m. In the first layer the wind field profiles are in good agreement, however, the correlation values between SODAR and radiosonde data, gets significantly lower for the other two layers. The results suggest that the SODAR data should better be used if operating from surface up to 500 m and with greater vertical resolution.

Difusion of contaminants in low wind conditions employing a Lagrangian stochastic model Timm, Andréa Ucker Roberti, Débora Regina Degrazia, Gervásio Annes Anfossi, Domenico

Abstract in English:

A Lagrangian stochastic particle model is utilized to simulate the dispersion and the transport of contaminants under low wind stable conditions in the tracer experiment carried in the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL). In this work a new parameterization for the parameters representing the frequencies associated to the meandering phenomenon is tested. The new parameterization is expressed in terms of a non-dimensional quantity that controls the frequencies of the meandering oscillation and of the time scale associated to a coherent structure in a fully developed turbulence. The simulations show that the considered Lagrangian model, incorporating this new parameterization, reproduces correctly the diffusion of passive scalars in a low wind speed stable atmospheric boundary layer.
