Open-access “Three years in Brazil”: images and accounts of a Premonstratensian about the Gymnasium Espírito Santo, in Jaguarão, RS (1901-1904)

This article addresses the historical-educational aspects of a Catholic institution established by the Premonstratensian Order in Jaguarão, Rio Grande do Sul, which existed from 1901 to 1914. The aim is to understand aspects of school and regional culture, drawing on the work Three Years in Brazil, written between 1901 and 1904, consisting of travel accounts and images produced by Father Schoenaers. As a theoretical and methodological framework, the Cultural History approach was adopted, with bibliographic research based on written and iconographic sources. As a result, we present the singularity of the photographs and accounts analyzed, which seek to give visibility to a Catholic school, as well as the possibility of eliciting aspects of its history from them.
