Queer fandom as a heterotopia: A netnography of Brazilian fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race de Moura, Vitor Moura, Bruno Melo de Souza-Leão, André Luiz Maranhão Hermann, Veronika

Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Purpose This study explores how Brazilian fans of RuPaul's Drag Race (RPDR) construct a queer fandom heterotopia through online interactions. Theoretical framework We position our study within Consumer Culture Theory (CCT), integrating research on queer consumer cultures and the participatory culture of fandoms. We also draw on Foucault's concept of heterotopia to guide our conceptualization. Design/methodology/approach The study employed netnography based on one year of data from X (formerly Twitter). Findings Three dimensions that shape a queer fandom heterotopia were identified: Will for the Extraordinary, reflecting fans' desire to transcend routine consumption; Care for the Collective, emphasizing community building and engagement; and Sharing Self-Promotions, exhibiting creative identities and self-representations. Practical & social implications of research Our results demonstrate how queer media consumers create heterotopic spaces through consumption practices within participatory fan cultures that challenge oppressive social norms. They also highlight the active role of fans in subverting media narratives and constructing spaces that, while not utopian, can help ensure the survival of queer subjectivities. Ultimately, these heterotopias increase visibility, safety, and support for LGBTQIAPN+ communities, offering clear practical and social insights. Originality/value This study addresses a gap in current CCT research by examining the underexplored consumption of RPDR in Brazil. It offers a rich empirical case that advances theories about global media flows and transcultural fandoms. Furthermore, our conceptualization adds value by demonstrating how interactions between queer media fans contribute to the normalization of queerness within the online fandom environment, simultaneously empowering fans to act beyond its immediate confines.

Middle Managers in Strategic Processes and Practices: Evidence from a Brazilian Manufacturing Company Fonseca, Regina Célia Zimmermann da Fernandes, Bruno Henrique Rocha Vaz, Samir Lótfi

Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Purpose Strategic renewal (SR) is a process involving beliefs, actions, and learning that helps organizations adjust their strategy in response to environmental changes. This study explores how middle managers (MMs) influence SR through their roles in strategy implementation. Theoretical framework Using intraorganizational ecology theory, this study examines MMs’ contributions through the processes of variation, selection, and retention. MMs were involved in planning and executing cycles, using lean practices, and engaging in the ongoing development of strategic initiatives. Design/methodology/approach A longitudinal qualitative study was conducted at a Brazilian manufacturing firm over ten years (2012-2022), including 125 semi-structured interviews with MMs involved in strategic workshops and lean-based practices. The study examines SR across four phases: professionalization, recognition, depression, and resumption. Findings MMs are key to both executing existing strategies and driving SR. They mediate between top-down directives and emergent strategic needs, helping align initiatives with formal structures. MMs contribute to SR through mechanisms such as reducing resistance, promoting integration, fostering cognitive development, and supporting organizational learning and adaptation. Practical & social implications of research The proficiency of MMs in strategic roles enhances SR. The study highlights the importance of MMs in enabling strategic flexibility and offers insights into leveraging middle management for sustainable transformation. Originality/value This research bridges the gap between strategy implementation and renewal by illustrating how MMs, as enactors and originators of strategic change, influence SR through lean, practice-based interactions.

Public data opening and corporate ESG performance: Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment in China Feng, Yuan Zhuo, Jiani Nie, Changfei

Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Purpose This study examines how public data opening (PDO) affects corporate ESG performance. Theoretical framework The study combines the slack resources theory, corporate governance theory, and other economic theories to highlight the mechanisms through which PDO may affect corporate ESG performance. Design/methodology/approach Considering the launch of Chinese provincial PDO platforms as a quasi-natural experiment, this study uses a difference-in-differences (DID) model with panel data from Chinese A-share corporations from 2012 to 2022 to analyze the potential effects of PDO on corporate ESG performance. Findings The results show that PDO effectively improves corporate ESG performance, particularly in regions with low informatization and marketization levels, as well as among corporations with a strong perception of uncertainty and state-owned enterprises. Mechanism analyses reveal that PDO may improve corporate ESG performance by reducing corporate information asymmetry, promoting digital transformation, and enhancing green innovation. Practical and social implications of the research The findings provide fresh insights for policymakers to promote the marketization of data elements and enhance corporate ESG performance, while also offering a reference for future research. Originality/value The study constructs a theoretical framework for how PDO affects corporate ESG performance, which extends and enriches the literature on the impacts of PDO and the factors influencing corporate ESG performance.

TMT Conflict and Innovative Performance: The Moderating Role of Socialization Capabilities and Decision-Making Decentralization Del Rio-Cortina, Jorge Vega-Jurado, Jaider Prieto-Florez, Javier

Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Purpose This study aims to analyze the influence of conflict within the top management team (TMT) on innovative performance. It considers the moderating roles of socialization capabilities and decentralized decision-making and addresses a theoretical and empirical gap in the literature. Theoretical framework This study examines the relationship between conflict within the management team and innovative performance. It differentiates between task and relationship conflict and explores the moderating role of socialization capabilities and decentralization. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative approach was adopted to estimate three theoretical models that allow for the evaluation of relationships between conflict in the TMT and innovation. These models are based on data collected from organizations in various sectors. Findings The results show that task conflict positively affects innovative performance, while relationship conflict negatively impacts it. Practical & social implications of research To strengthen TMT leadership, it is recommended that programs be implemented to improve interpersonal skills and foster trust and communication. Additionally, adopting decentralized structures that facilitate innovation is advised. Originality/value This study provides a novel approach by analyzing the interaction between internal TMT factors and organizational structural factors.

Linking meaningful work to job performance through work engagement: A moderated model of task interdependence in the hospitality sector Sinha, Deepti Sinha, Sachin Prasannan, Arun Kumar Nicholas, Jeslin

Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Purpose The hospitality sector has undergone substantial changes in terms of its job requirements and the need for work engagement practices. This study investigates the relationships between meaningful work, work engagement, employee performance, and task interdependence in India’s hospitality sector. Theoretical framework The theoretical framework is based on Kahn’s (1990) work engagement framework and Bakker and Demerouti’s (2007) Job-Demand Resources (JD-R) model. Design/methodology/approach Hypotheses were tested statistically using structural equation modeling (SEM) with a cross-sectional sample of 301 hospitality sector employees in four Indian cities. Findings The results highlight the crucial role of meaningful work and engagement in achieving sustained performance outcomes. Work engagement was found to be a significant mediator in the model. However, task interdependence did not have a statistically significant moderating effect. While age showed no significant influence on job performance, work experience emerged as a significant predictor of performance. Practical and social implications of the research The study provides substantial evidence of the critical role that meaningful work and work engagement play in driving job performance in the hospitality sector. Enhancing meaningfulness and nurturing engagement collectively form a practical roadmap for achieving superior service performance in hospitality organizations. Originality/value Since little research has been conducted on hospitality sector employees, this study offers empirical support for engagement-based performance models within the JD-R framework. By examining hospitality sector employees, the study expands the empirical base of JD-R research beyond traditional corporate settings. It demonstrates that meaning-driven engagement mechanisms are equally important in service-oriented, high-demand environments.

Characteristics of e-commerce platforms that favor online sales García Martínez, Ana María Rodríguez Orejuela, Augusto Osorio Andrade, Carlos Fernando

Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Purpose To analyze how e-commerce platform characteristics influence online sales, focusing specifically on Mercado Libre and the fourth-generation Echo Dot (Alexa). Theoretical framework The study is grounded in e-commerce and online consumer behavior theories and examines variables such as seller reputation, price, electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM), discounts, product description, and availability. Design/methodology/approach An explanatory research design was employed using mixed methods and a retrospective approach. A total of 128 product listings were analyzed using a robust Poisson regression model. Findings Product price, textual description, and available units have a significant impact on online sales. Conversely, seller reputation, eWOM volume, and discounts did not demonstrate a significant relationship within this specific context. Practical & social implications of research This study contributes to the literature on e-commerce in Latin America, a historically under-researched region. It provides a perspective based on observable variables, thereby complementing previous studies. Practical implications include actionable strategies for optimizing product presentation, pricing, and inventory management in emerging markets such as Colombia. Originality/value The research provides empirical evidence regarding the relative importance of distinct e-commerce platform characteristics within a Latin American context. The methodological focus on directly observable variables offers a novel perspective in the field. These findings are highly valuable for sellers and e-commerce platform managers operating in emerging markets.
