Open-access A digital game to explore learning black holes and Hawking radiation

Abstract

Modern physics involves complex concepts that require the visualization of abstract ideas, demanding tangible strategies to facilitate understanding. This study presents a puzzle game developed for mobile devices, aimed at helping 1st-year high school students in learning physical concepts related to Black Holes, Hawking Radiation, and Stephen Hawking’s studies. The game uses the accelerometer, transforming it into an active experience where students interact through hand movements. Fifty-five students participated, divided into two groups, in a quasi-experiment with a crossover design: one group used the game before the theoretical classes, and the other after. Knowledge tests and the MEEGA+ instrument validated the game’s effectiveness and user experience. The results indicated greater efficiency when the game was used as an introduction to the topics before the lessons, increasing student engagement and motivation, with some even suggesting new challenges. The innovative approach was widely accepted, integrating learning and playfulness. However, the diversity of mobile device models posed technical challenges due to the sensor’s variable behavior. It was concluded that educational games, especially in complex topics like modern physics, are valuable tools for stimulating student interest and comprehension.
