Original Article Selectivity of post-emergence herbicides in direct-seeded onion Bezerra, Larissa R. F. C. Bandeira, Jesley N. Ribeiro, Matheus A. Hernández, María C. R. Silva, Caio Á. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Limited chemical control options and high onion sensitivity to post-emergence herbicides hinder efficient weed management, especially under direct-seeding systems in semi-arid regions, increasing production costs. Reduced herbicide rates and split applications may improve crop selectivity while maintaining weed control. This study aimed to evaluate the selectivity of post-emergence herbicides applied at different doses and phenological stages in onion grown under Brazilian semi -arid conditions. Four field experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with three replications, each evaluating a single herbicide (oxyfluorfen, flumioxazin, pendimethalin, or oxadiazon). Fifteen treatments were evaluated, combining herbicide doses with three application timings (1-2, 3, and 5 fully expanded leaves), plus an untreated control. Crop injury was visually assessed at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after application (DAA). Mild phytotoxicity symptoms (< 10%) were observed mainly at early growth stages, particularly when applications were performed at the 1- or 2-leaf stage, while treatments applied at more advanced stages (3 to 5 leaves) caused little or no injury. Symptoms were transient, with recovery observed by 21 DAA. Sequential applications occasionally prolonged low -intensity injury but did not exceed acceptable levels. No significant differences in commercial yield were detected among treatments. Bulb classification was predominantly concentrated in Class 3 (50-70 mm), with values generally above 60%, indicating high commercial quality and uniformity. The results demonstrate that the evaluated herbicides were selective for onion under semi-arid conditions when applied at appropriate doses and growth stages, with early stages being more sensitive and later stages more tolerant, without compromising yield or bulb quality. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This study evaluated the growth, ecophysiological performance, and yield of cassava varieties as affected by harvest timing under rainfed conditions in the Agreste region of Alagoas, Brazil. The experiment was conducted from April 2023 to December 2024, using a 2 × 5 factorial scheme in a randomized block design with four replicates. Two cassava varieties (Caravela and Pretinha) were assessed at five harvest times (12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 months after planting), with agrometeorological, growth, physiological, and yield variables monitored throughout the cycle. Although the regional climate, characterized by adequate annual rainfall and mean air temperature, was generally favorable for cassava cultivation, summer droughts limited vegetative growth. The Pretinha variety showed greater shoot dry biomass accumulation, reaching 51.4 t ha-1 at 20 months after planting (MAP). By contrast, Caravela exhibited superior root performance, achieving higher fresh root yield (61.5 t ha-1), dry root yield (34.6 t ha-1), starch yield (18.7 t ha-1), and harvest index (0.7). Physiological evaluations revealed significant cassava plasticity in response to seasonal water deficit, with coordinated adjustments in photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and transpiration across harvest times. Overall, Caravela is more suitable for industrial purposes, whereas Pretinha is better adapted to production systems that require high shoot biomass. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT The reuse of domestic effluent in rural areas is an emerging social technology, especially in family farming systems. In this context, the adoption of these systems requires attention to the quality of the water used, since its physicochemical characteristics may influence soil and agricultural crops. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate, through multivariate analysis, the physicochemical quality of water sources from three domestic effluent reuse systems intended for irrigation in rural communities of the semi-arid region, aiming at their suitability for agricultural use and the identification of potential risks of soil salinization and sodification. Sampling was carried out in four periods throughout the year, encompassing water from the supply source, domestic effluent entering the treatment system, and effluent treated by the decanter-digester system. Physicochemical analyses focused on pH, electrical conductivity (EC), calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chlorides, carbonates, and bicarbonates, assessing their suitability for agricultural use. The correlation matrix showed strong associations among electrical conductivity, sodium, chloride, and sodium adsorption ratio, indicating these parameters as the main risk factors for agricultural use. The principal components discriminated the raw effluent with high sodification potential; source waters showed low ionic load; and the treated effluent exhibited a tendency toward salinity, indicating reduction in sodicity, but without reducing the concentration of dissolved salts. The results of the factor analysis confirmed these patterns, highlighting salinity as the main limitation to the agricultural reuse of treated effluent. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT The present study was conducted at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, in the years 2024 and 2025, to evaluate the performance of three supervised classifiers - maximum likelihood, random forest, and support vector machine - for spectral discrimination between maize (Zea mays L.) and the weed (Cyperus rotundus), considering different phenological stages and two cropping seasons (main and second crop), using multispectral images acquired by remotely piloted aircraft. Overall accuracy, as well as class metrics of precision, recall, and F1-score, were used to evaluate the performance of the algorithms in classifying four targets: maize, weed, soil, and shadow. The performance of the classifiers improved as the phenological stage progressed. In the first year (second crop), the V8 phenological stage showed the greatest differentiation between the plants, and the highest-performing classifier was maximum likelihood, with an overall accuracy of 89%. For the maize class, precision was 0.88, recall was 0.81, and F1-score was 0.85, and for the weed class, precision was 0.68, recall was 0.89, and F1-score was 0.77. In the second year (main crop), the best differentiation occurred at the V6 stage, and the maximum likelihood classifier again presented the best performance, with an overall accuracy of 88%, precision of 1.00, recall of 0.78, and F1-score of 0.88 for the maize class, and precision of 0.52, recall of 1.00, and F1-score of 0.68 for the weed class. Thus, across the years analyzed, the maximum likelihood classifier performed best. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Flooding, depending on exposure time, can be stressful and impair plant morphophysiology, but the foliar application of salicylic acid (SA) is an efficient physiological management to alleviate these negative effects. We aimed to evaluate the responsiveness of Hymenaea courbaril L. to flooding and the potential of SA to alleviate the associated stress. Seedlings received foliar applications of four SA concentrations (0, 100, 200, and 400 mg L-1), were exposed to two water regimes (control and flooded), and were evaluated at 15 and 30 days. The treatments were arranged in a subplot scheme, with water regimes assigned to plots and SA doses to subplots. The evaluation periods were treated as time-structured plots. Although flooding decreased photochemical activity in photosystem II, especially at 15 days, it did not negatively affect seedling growth. Foliar application of SA at varying doses increased chlorophyll indices and stimulated seedling growth, as reflected in biomass production, but did not affect photochemical efficiency. H. courbaril seedlings are physiologically responsive to flooding, but this did not reflect in growth through adjustment mechanisms. Foliar application of SA at a dose between 242-266 mg L-1 stimulates the growth of H. courbaril seedlings, regardless of exposure time and water regimes. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT The search to improve postharvest fruit quality and the preservation of perishable fruits involves increasing antioxidants, which can be achieved with growth regulators. Among them, salicylic acid and jasmonic acid stand out, acting by increasing antioxidant capacity, improving the preservation and quality of the fruits. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate the effect of salicylic acid and jasmonic acid on the quality and postharvest conservation of cherry tomato fruits in different storage times. The experiment was performed in a completely randomized design in a split-plot scheme (4 × 3), with the plots consisting of four phytohormones concentrations (SA = 500 µM salicylic acid; JA = 50 µM jasmonic acid; SA + JA = 500 µM salicylic acid + 50 µM jasmonic acid, and control - without application of phytohormones), and the subplots of three storage times (0, 8, and 16 days). SA increased the values of color, fruit firmness, soluble solids and lycopene at 16 days of storage. The SA + JA combination improved the antioxidant activity of the fruits, with increases in the contents of soluble solids, reducing sugars, ascorbic acid, β-carotene, total polyphenols and ABTS activity at 8 days of storage. In this context, foliar application of 500 µM of SA + 50 µM of JA promoted improvements in the physicochemical quality and in the conservation of the shelf life of cherry tomato fruits. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Sloping croplands in the black soil region of Northeast China are experiencing decreases in aggregate stability and nutrient retention. To address this issue, a field experiment with four tillage-cover management treatments, i.e., downslope no-tillage with straw mulch (SM), cross-slope no-tillage with straw mulch (CM), downslope no-tillage with cover crop (SC), and conventional tillage (CK), was conducted to investigate the dynamics and patterns of water-stable aggregate size distribution and stability indices (water-stable aggregates > 0.25 mm (WR0.25), mean weight diameter (MWD), and geometric mean diameter (GMD)), as well as aggregate-associated soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) in the 0-60 cm soil profile across tillage directions and mulching measures. All the mulching-tillage treatments increased the WR0.25, MWD, GMD, aggregate-associated SOC and TN contents, and the contribution of > 0.25 mm aggregates to total SOC and TN; however, these improvements generally decreased with increasing soil depth. The aggregate stability indices were positively correlated with the SOC and TN stored in the aggregates, with the strongest relationships observed in the 0-20 cm layer. Overall, cross-slope no-tillage with straw mulch (CM) treatment was the most effective treatment for enhancing aggregate stability and promoting carbon and nitrogen accumulation in relatively larger aggregates. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Spatial and temporal variability of spectral responses creates challenges for developing models to estimate crop growth attributes, requiring more robust modeling approaches. This study proposes a protocol to generate multivariate models that estimate the growth attributes of Tifton85 forage (Cynodon spp.) from spectral responses derived from multispectral images by unmanned aerial vehicles. The experiment was conducted in a production area in Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At each evaluation date, plant chlorophyll index, plant height, and leaf area index were measured. Multispectral images captured by a camera mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle were also collected to calculate vegetation indices. Principal component analysis was used to develop an index that integrates vegetation indices over the crop growth period (CGI, crop growth index). Estimation models and spatial variability maps were generated from the linear relationship between crop growth attributes and the CGI. The responses of the vegetation indices were combined into a single principal component, which explained 99.94% of the variance. Models based on the CGI achieved greater accuracy than univariate models and produced spatial-variability maps consistent with observed crop growth attributes. These findings indicate that the CGI has strong potential for estimating Tifton85 growth attributes and is particularly effective for crops exhibiting high spatial and temporal variability. |
