Artigo Nanometric particles of yttrium ferrite Godoi, Ricardo H. M. Jafelicci Jr., Miguel Marques, Rodrigo F. C. Varanda, Laudemir C. Lima, Roberto C. Abstract in English: Nanoparticles of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) were obtained by coprecipitation. The particles were prepared by hydrolysis in acid medium with addition of ammonia or urea, for homogeneous nucleation, at 90ºC. Different compositions and spherical morphologies were achieved by changing reactants concentrations and precipitation agent. X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis and electrophoretic mobility were carried out on these particles to investigate the obtained phase, phase transition temperature, morphology, particle size and zeta potential, respectively. |

Artigo Spectroscopic studies of heterobimetallic carbonyls cis-[Fe(CO)4(HgX)2], X=Cl, Br, I Zamian, José Roberto Mauro, Antônio Eduardo Nogueira, Vânia Martins Abstract in English: The series of compounds cis-[Fe(CO)4(HgX)2], X=Cl,Br,I shows an octahedral geometry around the iron atom with the two HgX groups cis to each other. In this paper the assignment for the carbonyl stretching modes and the calculation of their force constants were performed on the basis of the Cotton-Krainhanzel model. Taking into account all the data from the IR, 199Hg NMR and UV-vis spectra it is possible to verify the influence of X on the electronic densities at the metallic centers. |

Artigo Optimization of a photochemical mechanism for Brazilian urban air quality simulation Arbilla, Graciela Oliveira, Katia Maria Pinto Guedes de Abstract in English: A photochemical reaction mechanism for the description of air quality in Brazilian urban regions is described and evaluated by comparison with chamber experiments. The mechanism was developed for use in ozone modeling and application of control strategies. The oxidation of ethanol and methyl-ter-butyl-ether is also considered. Using this chemical model, a trajectory simulation of Brazil Avenue, Rio de Janeiro, was performed. The model predicts that ozone should reach a maximum of 22.4 ppb at 14:57 h. This value is in good agreement with the experimental measurements of 22.5 ppb for 14:00 h and 22.3 ppb for 15:00 h. |

Artigo The study of influence of crosslinking and organic additives on the behavior of chitosan gels Ginani, Marconi F. Navarro, Marco V. Nascimento, Ednaldo G. do Oliveira, Uazir O. B. de Abstract in English: The physical-chemical process of swelling in water-based gel of natural polymers is investigated with the purpose of applying these systems to biomedical materials for controlled release of drugs. In this work we develop a study about the sol-gel transition of solutions of chitosan in the presence of formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde like crosslinking agents and we have determined the effect of many aditives in the time of gelification from the elaborated sistems. The phisical-chemistry process of swelling of the formed gels was evaluated in function of the degree of crosslinking of the incorporated aditives and the pH. Gelling times of chitosan solutions were obtained using viscosimetric measurement, in the pre-gel state, as well as condutivity ones.The results obtained suggest that component concentration modifies the kinetic profile of the transition and the swelling behavior. Regarding H+ content, the gels were highly susceptible to swelling in acidic conditions, which characterize this system as pH - sensitive. |

Artigo Flow injection spectrophotometric determination of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) in pharmaceutical formulations Aniceto, Clezio Fatibello-Filho, Orlando Abstract in English: A flow injection (FI) spectrophotometric procedure is proposed for the determination of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride) in pharmaceutical preparations. Powdered samples containing from 2.5 to 4.5 mg, were previously dissolved in 0.1 mol L-1 phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.0) and a volume of 500 muL was injected directly into a carrier stream consisting of this same phosphate buffer solution, flowing at 4.4 mL min-1. The stable blue indophenol dye produced in the oxidation of pyridoxine hydrochloride by potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) and N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine solution was directly measured at 684 nm. Vitamin B6 was determined in five pharmaceutical preparations in the 0.5 to 6.0 mg L-1 concentration range (calibration graph: A= -0.00499 + 0.11963 C; r= 0.9991, where A is the absorbance and C is the vitamin B6 concentration in mg L-1), with a detection limit of 0.02 mg L-1 (3 Sblank/slope). The recovery of this vitamin from three samples ranged from 97.5 to 103.3 %. The analytical frequency was 62 h-1 and r.s.d. were less than 2% for solutions containing 1.0 and 3.0 mg L-1 vitamin B6 (n= 10). The results obtained for the determination of vitamin B6 in commercial formulations were in good agreement with those obtained by a spectrophotometric procedure (r=0.9997) and also with the label values (r= 0.9998). |

Artigo Dating of the humin fraction of soil organic matter and its comparison with 14C ages of fossil charcoal Gouveia, Susy Eli Marques Pessenda, Luiz Carlos Ruiz Aravena, Ramon Abstract in English: The radiocarbon dating of the soil organic matter (SOM) is a polemic subject, due mainly to the complexity of the formation of the soils and to the variable contamination from several sources. Soil samples from 4 different Brazilian localities were submitted to physical and chemical pre-treatment for the extraction of humin fraction, which is the most stable organic compound and theoretically the oldest and representative of the age of the SOM. The radiocarbon dating obtained from the total SOM and their humin fractions are compared to the 14C ages from buried charcoals at similar depths. The radiocarbon ages obtained from such charcoals are, in most of the cases, concordant within the experimental errors of those obtained on humin fractions, or are in average 10% higher, with one exception. Thus, the ages on humin fractions could be assumed as the minimum ages for the associated soils, while the results obtained on total SOM, even at depths until 200 cm, exhibit pronounced contamination effect by modern carbon, rejuvenating their ages. |

Artigo Rhodium(II)-catalysed intramolecular insertion reaction of multifunctional diazo compounds: synthesis of oxetan-3-one-2-carboxilate and other heterocycles Padwa, Albert Sá, Marcus Mandolesi Abstract in English: gamma-Hydroxy-alpha-diazo-beta-ketoesters are key intermediates in the chemistry of penicilin-based antibiotics and natural products. The method developed here for the synthesis of ethyl 2-diazo-4-hydroxy-3-oxo-butanoate 17 (in two steps from the diazo mercurial 2) compares very favorably with those reported in the literature for similar compounds. The Rh2(OAc)4-mediated intramolecular OH-insertion reaction of the diazo hydroxy ester 17 was investigated, furnishing the oxetan-3-one-2-carboxilate 18 in good yield. When the diazo ester lacks a free hydroxyl group as in the case of the phenoxy diazo ester 11 an intramolecular CH-insertion takes place, affording the 2H-chromene 20 in almost quantitative yield. The behavior of other functionalized diazo esters towards Rh2(OAc)4 was also investigated. |

Revisão Conformationally constrained induced peptides containing (aza)lactam units Pohlmann, Adriana Raffin Quirion, Jean-Charles Guillaume, Dominique Husson, Henri-Philippe Abstract in English: Conformational constraint is an approach which can be used to restrict the flexibility of peptide molecules and to provide information on the topographical requirements of receptors. The incorporation of conformationally constrained units in a peptide can lead to peptide analogues that present numerous advantages such as the potentialization of the pharmacological activity and the decrease of enzymatic degradation. This review discusses the peptide analogues containing a lactam or azalactam unit in their sequences. Of particular interest has been the replacement of a dipeptide motif in a peptide that simulates a beta-turn. |

Divulgação The use of lipases as agents of kinetic resolution of enantiomers in organic synthesis: general aspects of solvent's influence Costa, Valentim Emilio Uberti Amorim, Hermes Luís Neubauer de Abstract in English: In organic synthesis, lipases are the most frequently used biocatalysts. They are efficient stereoselective catalysts in the kinetic resolution of a wide variety of chiral compounds. The discovery that enzymes possess catalytic activity in organic solvents has made it possible to address the question of reaction medium influence on enzymatic specificity. Perhaps the most exciting and significant development in this emerging area is the discovery that enzyme specificity, in particular enantioselectivity, can be affected by changing from one organic solvent to another. This article discusses the scope and possible mechanistic models of this phenomenon in hydrolases, specially lipases, as well as directions of future research in the area. |

Divulgação Some aspects of immunoassays applied to analytical chemistry Gil, Eric de Souza Kubota, Lauro Tatsuo Yamamoto, Yoshimi Imoto Abstract in English: In the last years, the use of antibody-antigen interactions, has earned attention not only for clinical analysis, but also for food industry and environmental control. Since the scope and diversity of immunoassay technology have shown a wide development. Continuous advances in order to analyse complex matrices, to improve reliability, simplicity (nonseparation) and to get multiple simultaneous assays, and extreme sensitivity (lower than zeptomole detection limits) are increasing. Many strategies have been investigated including chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassays, DNA as label and development of flow injection and immunosensors techniques. This subject became very usefull and important in nowadays that are taught in the undergraduate courses of chemistry in the european universities. However in our country are still ignored in the chemistry course. |

We introduce some necessary approximation methods for the electronic and nuclear spectra study adopting a systematic approach. In addition though, we have performed calculations in order to illustrate these methods. |

Nota técnica Fresh, dry and ash mass relationship in biological materials - a tool for sampling in field and analysis of samples Vasconcellos, Luisa Maria de Hollanda e Lauria, Dejanira da Costa Silva, Lucia Helena Costa Taddei, José Fernando Abstract in English: Little is known about the amount of water and ash in brazilian foodstuffs and plants. The relationships between fresh, dry and ash weight were determined in 40 different biological samples. It could be an important tool when one studies biological material containing low concentration of the chemical elements. This study address to determine these relationships and to provide the amount of biological material that one needs to collect. It aims to supply information that could be used to improve the detection limit, precision and accuracy of the analytical methodology utilized. |

Nota técnica Development of a filtration and titration method for the determination of the acidity of humic acids Prado, Alexandre G. S. Souza, Sidney M. Silva, Wilson T. Lopes da Rezende, Maria O. de O. Abstract in English: The acidity determinations method of humic acids (HA) content was developed by Schnitzer and Gupta and is a very well known procedure. Nevertheless, care is necessary to prevent measure errors due to non-controlled BaCO3 production, during the filtration and titration of HA total acidity. To overcome this problem, we developed in our laboratory a simple filtration and titration system for the determination of HA acidity under inert atmosphere. This system enables a better reproducibility and accuracy of total, carboxylic and phenolic acidity measures than those by Schnitzer and Gupta method. |

Educação Thin layer electrochemical cells, principle and application Pernaut, Jean Michel Matencio, Tullio Abstract in English: Theoretical and practical aspects concerning construction and use of a thin layer electrochemical cell are presented. Construction was realized by a simple technic and geometry was optimized in order to minimize the problems of electrical resistance. A well known redox system was studied ((Fe(III)(CN)6(3-)/Fe(II)(CN) 6(4-)) using two experimental methods, cyclic voltammetry and pulse chronopotentiometry. A numerical integration based-program was developed to calculate the voltammetric current in case of nernstian and non-nernstian behaviours and a diffusional model was used to treat the chronopotentiometric data. Thermodynamic (potential, concentration) and kinetic parameters (diffusion coefficient) were successfully determined for the redox system studied in this work. |

Educação Constructions of models for illustration of molecular structure in chemical class Lima, M. B. Lima-Neto, P. De Abstract in English: This paper describes the construction of a kit of molecular model for illustration of molecular structure in chemical class using cheap materials. The atoms were represented by plastic spheres and the bonds between the atoms were made from plastic straws which were cut in the required length using a scale of 1.6 cm corresponding to 100 pm. Examples of adaptations made in this kit for didactical application are given. |

Assuntos gerais Jean Paul Marat (1743-1793), scientist and translator of Newton Tosi, Lucía Abstract in English: Although Jean Paul Marat (1743-1793) is known as a political activist and as a founder of the controversial journal L'Ami du Peuple during the French Revolution, an important period of his life was spent as a medical practionner, and as a scientist. In 1765 he went to England, where he remained for eleven years mostly dedicated to medical practice and publications on that subject and on political and moral questions. Returning to France in 1776 he iniciated his researches on fire, electricity and light, that lasted practically until the French Revolution. In 1787 he published a translation of Newton's Opticks. In this article we describe in some detail his medical and scientific practice giving particular emphasis to his experiments on optics and to his theory about colors which strongly departs from newtonian theory, fully accepted by the French scientific community of the time. |
