Synthesis and characterisation of the nanocomposites K0,1(PEO)xMoS2 (x= 0,5; 1,2) Wypych, Fernando Adad, Luciana Barreto Grothe, Mariely Cristina

Abstract in English:

The reaction of an aqueous solution of poly(ethylene oxide) (peo - mw 100.000) with a neutral aqueous suspension of single layers of MoS2 was studied. The single layers aqueous suspension was prepared by first intercalating lithium (using n-Butyllithium in n-hexane) and reaction of these ternary compound with water under ultrasound stirring. The suspension was washed several times with water until neutral pH. The suspension was mixed with the PEO aqueous solution in the presence of KCl. Two single phase compounds were obtained with the expansion of 4,8 and 9,0Å, attributed to the solvation of the intercalated potassium cations with mono and double layers, respectively.

Reactions of Cp'(CO)2MnPPh2H with CH3COCl and CH3S(O)2Cl in THF/triethylamine: evidences of the first complex stabilisation of a phosphorus-homologous of the sulfonamides Oliveira, Gelson Manzoni de Seiffert, Milton Lorenz, Ingo-Peter

Abstract in English:

Cp'Mn(CO)3 (Cp'=h5-C5H4-CH 3) reacts with P(C6H5)2H in THF to give Cp'(CO)2MnPPh2H (Ph = Phenyl) (1), by substitution of one CO ligand. The reaction of 1 with CH3COCl and CH3S(O)2Cl in the presence of triethylamine occurs under electrophilic substitution on the diphenylphosphan ligand to yield the acetyl- and sulfonylphosphane complexes of manganese(I) Cp'(CO)2MnPPh2COCH3 (2) and Cp'(CO)2MnPPh2S(O)2 CH3 (3). The complex stabilisation of these molecules, wich are hitherto unknown in the free state, is only accomplished by blocking the free electron pair on phosphorus by coordination. The new complexes 1, 2 and 3 were analysed by IR, ¹H-NMR and 31P-MNR spectroscopy and their similar structures are discusssed.
Monte Carlo thermodynamic and structural properties of the TIP4P water model: dependence on the computational conditions Cordeiro, João Manuel Marques

Abstract in English:

Classical Monte Carlo simulations were carried out on the NPT ensemble at 25°C and 1 atm, aiming to investigate the ability of the TIP4P water model [Jorgensen, Chandrasekhar, Madura, Impey and Klein; J. Chem. Phys., 79 (1983) 926] to reproduce the newest structural picture of liquid water. The results were compared with recent neutron diffraction data [Soper; Bruni and Ricci; J. Chem. Phys., 106 (1997) 247]. The influence of the computational conditions on the thermodynamic and structural results obtained with this model was also analyzed. The findings were compared with the original ones from Jorgensen et al [above-cited reference plus Mol. Phys., 56 (1985) 1381]. It is notice that the thermodynamic results are dependent on the boundary conditions used, whereas the usual radial distribution functions g(O/O(r)) and g(O/H(r)) do not depend on them.

Dealumination of offretite through gamma-irradiation Carvalho, A. P. Carvalho, M. Brotas de

Abstract in English:

Protonic offretite samples were modified by gamma-irradiation under different conditions of humidity. The results of infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction reveal that the presence of water is essential to promote dealumination, as the samples irradiated in vacuum only show crystallinity loss. The degree of dealumination is, mainly, controlled by the gamma-irradiation dose while the textural modifications depend also on the percentage of water.

Geometric model apllied for studying glory and rainbow effects in atomic collisions Lemes, N. H. T. Belchior, J. C. Braga, J. P.

Abstract in English:

A simple analysis of glory and rainbow effects, together with the description of their trajectories is given by the geometric model. The energy dependence of glory and rainbow impact parameters and the energy dependence of the rainbow angle are determined analytically within the model. An universal function for glory and rainbow trajectories can be easily determined.

Utilization of residual liquid orange from juice processing as cultivation medium of Penicillium citrinum: biological depuration of the residue and enzyme production Tavares, Valquíria Barco Sivieri, Kátia Ceron, Carlos Roberto Silva, Roberto da Trabuco, Elizeu Lombardi, Fábio Renato Gomes, Eleni

Abstract in English:

Penicillium citrinum grown in orange juice processing wastes medium under continuous agitation was studied in order to establish optimal conditions (incubation period, incubation temperature, initial pH and nitrogen addition) for biomass and ribonuclease production, as well as, biological depuration of the wastes. Nitrogen addition to wastes medium increased the biomass and ribonuclease production and provides COD reduction. The soy meal shows to be the best nitrogen source. The conditions for a more favorable enzyme and biomass production and COD reduction were initial pH 6.0 and temperature of 27°C. The maximum value obtained for these parameters on optimal conditions of cultivation was 11 U/mL of enzyme, 4 mg/mL of biomass (dry matter) and 55% of COD reduction, in 96 hours of incubation.

Synthesis of a brassinosteroid analogue from vespertiline Gárate, José L. M. Magalhães, Gouvan C. de Romeiro, Luiz A. S.

Abstract in English:

In the last years, several research groups have been working on the synthesis of new steroidal plant hormones called brassinosteroids (BS), which promote plant growth and better crops. Many synthetic targets and applications of these compounds and their analogues have been described in the literature. From Solanum species of the Distrito Federal, we isolated the steroidal alkaloid solasodine, which was then converted into our starting material, vespertiline. By functionalization of rings A and B, we have synthesized a new analogue of BS, with a 2alpha,3alpha-dihydroxy-6-one structure, typical of the naturally occurring BS castasterone, the immediate biosynthetic precursor of brassinolide.

The influence of the material used in building the distiller in the sugar-cane-spirit chemical profile Nascimento, Ronaldo F. Cardoso, Daniel R. Lima Neto, Benedito dos Santos Franco, Douglas Wagner Farias, João Bosco

Abstract in English:

This paper describes variations in the profile of the main volatile organic compounds present in Brazilian sugar cane spirits distilled in copper and stainless steel distillers. The main organic compounds: aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, alcohols and esters, were determined through High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and High Resolution Gas Cromatography (HRGC). The spirits produced in copper distillers exhibit higher contents of aldehydes with respect to the ones produced in stainless steel. The inverse is true with respect to the higher alcohol and ester contents. No significant variation has been observed for the carboxylic acids.

Sources, reactivity and quantification of atmospheric methanol and ethanol Pereira, Pedro Afonso de Paula Andrade, Jailson B. de

Abstract in English:

In the last two decades, the use of oxygenated fuels, like methanol and ethanol, pure or in mixture with gasoline, has been growing due to benefits introduced into the air quality. In Brasil, the fraction of light duty vehicles powered by pure hydrated ethanol is estimated at about 4 million, while the remaining vehicles actually utilize a mixture (22:78 v/v) of ethanol:gasoline. As a consequence, there's a need for the availability of methods that can provide the evaluation of possible impacts of alcohol emissions in the formation of chemical species in the atmosphere, as ozone, aldehydes, carboxylic acids and so on. In this paper, methanol and ethanol are discussed in their general aspects, as well as their atmospheric sources, chemical reactivity and available methods of analysis.

Selective inhibitors of prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase-2 (PGHS-2): new target to the treatment for inflammatory diseases Lages, Adriana dos Santos Romeiro, Nelilma Correia Fraga, Carlos Alberto Manssour Barreiro, Eliezer Jesus

Abstract in English:

Prostaglandins (PG's), produced from arachidonic acid metabolism, are potent mediators of inflammation. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) exert their effects by inhibition of prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase (PGHS) enzyme, which catalyses the first committed step in arachidonic acid metabolism. Two isoforms of PGHS are known: PGHS-1, constitutively expressed in most tissues, and is responsible for physiological production of PG's. The second isoform, PGHS-2, is induced by cytokines, mitogens and endotoxins in inflammatory cells, and appears to be responsible for the elevated production of PG's during inflammation. With the recent discovery of the inducible PGHS (PGHS-2), the medicinal chemist now possesses a novel target for designing therapeutic agents that could provide suitable anti-inflammatory activity without the ulcerogenic and renal side effects associated with currently available NSAIDs, all of which inhibit both PGHS-1 and PGHS-2.

Abstract in English:

The generation of "cold light", visible to the human eye, by chemical reactions has attracted the attention of the scientific community since the beginning of this century. Besides the academic interest in the elucidation of the mechanisms of excited state formations, many chemiluminescence reactions have found widespread analytical applications. Moreover, the phenomenon of chemiluminescence can also be used as a tool in undergraduate and college teaching. In this article, we describe several known chemiluminescence demonstrations, which are suitable for school teaching. The main objective of this work is to produce didactic material in Portuguese to stimulate Brazilian secondary and high school teachers to use these experiments in the classroom. The demonstrations include singlet oxygen emission, the luminol reaction, oscillating chemiluminescence and the peroxyoxalate reaction.
