Open-access Gender schemas of self-concept inventory (IEGA)

Abstract

The purpose of this article was the construction and validation of Gender Schemas of Self-Concept Inventory (IEGA). This instrument evaluates two components of the self-concept <FONT FACE=Symbol>-</FONT> masculine schema and feminine schema. In the construction phase, the characteristics of the masculinity and femininity were explored and statistically analyzed. In the validation phase, two scales were composed by these characteristics <FONT FACE=Symbol>-</FONT> the masculine scale and the feminine scale of the IEGA. In both phases, the samples used were composed by university students. For the construction validity, factors analysis were performed for both scales and coefficient alpha was computed for all factors. The results of factors analysis using Principal Axis Factoring and oblique rotation showed that both scales were multidimensional. Properly validated, IEGA could be used in the evaluation of the masculine and feminine schemas of the self-concept.
