Exploring Religious Experience in Nigerian Igbo Indigenous Religious Tradition: Toward a Christianity and Church with an Indigenous Face Njoku, Okechukwu Camillus Mbonu, Caroline

ABSTRACT Various religious systems potentially generate religious experience for their adherents. Although religious experience is a particularly personal subjective involvement with the sacred, it, nevertheless, possesses a social element, in that socially acquired beliefs, rooted in religious traditions and symbolisms provide the cultural repertoire into which the individual is both socialized and draws upon for deeper personal meaning. This article explores how Igbo indigenous religious tradition shapes the translation and experience of the Christian faith in Igbo society. We argue that the dominance of spirits’ phenomenon in Igbo indigenous religious tradition, including spirit possession, has been creatively reworked mostly in prophetic, Charismatic, and Pentecostal versions of Christianity into experiences of the Holy Spirit for healing and edification of the community.

Proportionality as a Moral Principle in Punishment: Examining the Issue of Lynching/Jungle Justice in Nigeria Through the Lens of I Kings 21:1-19 Uroko, Favour C. Ukeachusim, Chidinma Precious

ABSTRACT This study examines I Kings 21:1-19 and its significance to the increasing mob lynching across Nigeria. I Kings 21:1-19 records the narrative of Naboth, who was lynched on the basis of a false allegation against him. Naboth was lynched by stoning. Jungle justice is also known as lynching and arbitrary execution, and it is on the rise in Nigeria. In 2022, Nigeria recorded more than ten cases of jungle justice, with the killing and burning of a female college student on false allegations. The government also seems to be carefree with regard to the arrest and prosecution of those involved in jungle justice, which has given boldness to perpetrators. This study used literary analysis to engage the text and the context. This article argues that the themes presented in I Kings 21:1-15 advocates for both proactive and reactive measures to prevent the occurrence of jungle justice.

John 15,1-8: a Re-reading Through Earth, SDGs, Covid 19, and Cape Town Farms Contexts Velden, Nina Müller van

Abstract One of the targets of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 seeks to ensure equitable sanitation for all by 2030, with a special focus on women and vulnerable groups. However, women working on farms often do not have access to adequate toilets, facing safety, hygiene and privacy issues. These challenges become even more critical in the face of COVID-19 and concerns about new superbugs. In John 15,1-8, Jesus employs vineyard farming imagery to describe the relationship between himself and God the Father, and in turn the relationship between the disciples and himself. In this article, I employ a gender-critical hermeneutical framework, informed by ecofeminist concerns and the intersectionality of gender, race and class, to offer a reading of this biblical passage within the context of Black women working on farms in the Western Cape. I ask to what extent this expectation of submissiveness set by Jesus to his disciples, should be accepted at face value, alongside the use of Earth imagery to implore such submissiveness.

ABSTRACT The climate crisis, pandemics and countless environmental catastrophes force us to confront the future we can expect for humanity and all of creation. Black women and the earth are the most affected in this context, which is shaped by patriarchy and a predatory economic system. Asking about the future means engaging the eschatological imagination to generate creative power and action capable of anticipating God’s desire for humanity and creation. We ask whether the Black diaspora, with its unique particularities, can contribute to Global theology. Can we reconfigure eschatology based on this particularity and, in doing so, nourish the hope of peoples who are massacred by the current system? To weave a black eschatology – an “eschatology of ancestry” – we use the threads of African ecofeminism and Afrodiasporic thought. We point to the ecodomy of quilombola ways of life as a practical eschatology.

Adam and Adamah: A Feminist Re-examination of Gender and Environment in the Yahwist’s Narrative Dike, Uzoma Amos

Abstract The Christian tradition of patriarchy often traces its roots to the Yahwist creation narrative in Genesis 2:21-25. The study asks a pivotal question: “Does the Yahwist creation narrative teach male primacy?" However, a closer examination of the Hebrew words "Adam" and "Adamah" suggests a more egalitarian relationship between man and woman. This study aims to re-examine the narrative using grammatical analysis and feminist hermeneutics to challenge the traditional interpretation of male headship. While some interpretations have been influenced by eisegesis, a careful analysis suggests that the Yahwist narrative does not explicitly advocate for male primacy. Instead, it presents a non-derogatory view of the feminine gender and emphasizes humanity’s responsibility to care for the earth. Hence, the study advocates for a reconsideration of male headship in the Christian traditions.

ABSTRACT This text analyzes how women in vulnerable contexts, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, achieve empowerment through African-based religions, with a focus on Candomblé and Umbanda. Based on intercultural philosophy and the exusiac perspective, the article highlights how these religious practices function as spaces of resistance and healing, welcoming women in situations of domestic violence and social vulnerability. The text expands the concept of “social parasitism”, introduced by Manoel Bomfim (1993), to include gender issues, reflecting on structural inequalities between men and women. The figure of Iansã is central to understanding how these religions help women deal with adversity, promoting cultural and collective strengthening. The article argues that Afro-Brazilian religions not only heal, but also rescue cultural practices erased by colonialism.

ABSTRACT This article presents the literary type behind the pericopes on fraternal correction and forgiveness in Mt 18. In the Old Testament, there are two ways of reestablishing communion in community life: mišpaṭ and rîb. Both are applied in the reading of the Community Discourse and compared with other arguments present in the five Discourses of Matthew. After that, it is analyzed which one is the most significant for Mt 18 and for the evangelist’s theology. This research concludes that the rîb is behind the practical indications in the Community Discourse, allowing a new understanding of fraternal correction, forgiveness, the way Jesus and God act in Matthew and the role of the community. These contributions are important, since community life, in its broadest definitions, is essential to our society. Thus, it is possible to understand how to practice the Heavenly Father’s desire that none of the little ones be lost.

ABSTRACT This paper, through exploratory literature research and qualitative analysis of the bibliography, seeks to answer the following question: how to understand pneumatic dynamism in its relationship with human happiness? To do this, examine the forgetfulness of the Holy Spirit and its reflection in the understanding of the relationship between theology and the human desire for happiness. It also analyzes the scope of the concept of happiness proposed in contemporary society and its implications for the emptying of the word happiness. It discusses the experience of the Holy Spirit as a dynamic structure that allows the human being to be happy and, thus, demonstrates that, open to pneumatic dynamism, the human being is to transcend a symbolic existence that, founded on the life of Jesus of Nazareth, finds the happiness in fidelity to one’s personal vocation. In this way, he presents a happy being who, for being human, is not confined to eschatological promises, but is vivid in his openness to the Spirit who, in his dynamism, shapes the totality of living in the now of history.

ABSTRACT The article analyzes the ecumenical dimension of the spirituality of the Synod on Synodality that the Catholic Church holds from 2021 to 2024. To this end, it explains the ecumenicity of the pillars of the synodal process method — encounter, listening, and discernment. It shows that the method of spiritual conversation creates the conditions so that within a church one can listen to what the Spirit says through other churches, to speak in a way that the voice of the Spirit resonates and to be strengthened in the journey towards unity in the Christian faith. The method of this study is exploratory research, with qualitative analysis of the bibliography relating to synodality and ecumenism, focusing on the synod documents on synodality. The conclusion is that synodality and ecumenism are mutually implicated in the spiritual process that supports churches in discerning the necessary steps for the common witness of the Christian faith.

ABSTRACT The article seeks to fill a gap in theological reflection, which is the theological ethics analysis of transgenic crops, a topic addressed summarily by Pope Francis in Laudato Si’. Being a very relevant reality of agriculture in South America, the text critically analyzes, develops, and expands the discernment criteria proposed by Francis for transgenic crops and provides elements for their application to the reality of the subcontinent. The argument concludes by showing that many of these criteria have not been adequately applied or explored in the analysis of these agricultural practices and that, therefore, it is essential to deepen the ethical (theological) analysis of this kind of agriculture due to its enormous transcendence and impact in South America, using the technocratic paradigm proposed by the Pontiff as a framework.

ABSTRACT This paper will expose the novel concept of “creative hypostatic union”, explained in line with the Christology of the Council of Chalcedon. This notion is shaped by the theological challenge posed by the Anthropology of the Second Vatican Council and by the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, which contrast both with the traditional interpretation of original sin and with the foundations of Scholastic theology. It is argued that original sin was a genetic crisis deliberately introduced into evolutionary biology by superhuman creatures in order to separate the origin of Man from the act of the Incarnation of Christ. Thus, contrary to the claims of St. Thomas Aquinas, the union of human and divine natures in the person of the Son of God is not created, but creative, for the very act of the Incarnation of Christ was to create our human nature as a culmination of the process of Hominization, ultimately frustrated by original sin until the event of the Immaculate Conception.
