Open-access Melodic generation via computational processes: a preliminary and pedagogical overview

This article examines melodic organization from a pedagogical and compositional standpoint, adopting an exploratory framework. Melody is initially defined through the interaction of pitch, rhythm, and ordering principles, serving as the basis for the presentation of several approaches to melodic construction. Although not intended to be exhaustive, these approaches highlight procedures with significant potential for computational implementation, some of which are illustrated through simplified examples. The study further outlines a set of melodic transformation techniques operating at different structural levels—such as chromatic, diatonic, integral, and mutational processes. When combined with harmonic derivation strategies that take the melodic line as a generative source, these procedures form a coherent toolkit for compositional practice. The proposed framework is intended both as a pedagogical resource for composition students and as a practical set of methods for composers interested in the systematic manipulation and development of melodic structures.
