Open-access Alcohol consumption as a social practice: implications for commensality and hospitality

The consumption of alcoholic beverages, often analyzed for its health effects, also carries significant sociocultural meanings. This study, through a literature review, investigates the intersections between alcohol consumption, hospitality, and commensality. The data indicate that alcoholic beverages are fundamental for social interaction, promoting conviviality, solidarity, and reciprocity. In many cultures, consumption is linked to celebrations and gatherings, representing welcome and hospitality. However, excessive consumption can lead to uncontrolled and violent behaviors, harming these experiences. Preferences and rituals vary according to each community’s traditions, influencing the way hospitality and commensality are experienced in different contexts. The article concludes that the relationship between alcohol, hospitality, and commensality is multifaceted and complex.
