Resumo Em agosto de 1939, Mário de Andrade publicou em O Estado de S. Paulo um artigo sobre a exposição comemorativa do centenário de nascimento de Machado de Assis, organizada pelo Instituto Nacional do Livro, que teve lugar na Biblioteca Nacional. No artigo, ele descreve a exposição, comenta o lugar privilegiado de Machado de Assis no quadro da literatura brasileira, discute o papel do intelectual, a importância da vida literária, a função das instituições culturais e o percurso formativo e de consagração da figura do escritor.

Abstract In August 1939, Mário de Andrade wrote an article for O Estado de S. Paulo about the exhibition in celebration of the centennial of Machado de Assis's birth organized by the National Book Institute and held at the National Library. In the article, Andrade describes the exhibition, comments on the privileged place of Machado de Assis in Brazilian literature, discusses the role of the intellectual, the importance of literary life, the function of cultural institutions and the path for forming and consecrating the figure of the writer.

Resumo Este artigo discute algumas tendências críticas seminais em torno da prosa machadiana, notadamente aquelas que trabalham com o conceito de sociedade enquanto categoria sociológica sumária. Para tanto, analisa aspectos do conto "Capítulo dos chapéus", aproximando-os das propostas teóricas do antropólogo Bruno Latour (2012) acerca da noção de social. Em diálogo com essas propostas, são levantadas hipóteses sobre o estatuto ontológico dos objetos e sua relação com as políticas afetivas do século XIX.

Abstract This article approaches some seminal critical trends involving the prose of Machado de Assis, notably those that address the concept of society as a mere sociological category. Therefore, this study analyzes aspects of the short story, "A Chapter of Hats," by approaching the theoretical proposals put forth by anthropologist Bruno Latour (2012) about the notion of the social. In dialogue with these proposals, hypotheses are raised regarding the ontological statute of objects and their relation to the affective policies of the nineteenth century.

Resumo Este texto visa analisar as ligações entre Esaú e Jacó e o Memorial de Aires, inseparáveis do vínculo entre Machado de Assis, o Editor e o Conselheiro Aires. Para entender esses vínculos é fundamental distinguir noções como livro, romance e narrativa. O livro é o objecto que contém o texto. O romance é a ficção que apresenta a narrativa. Em ambos os romances é possível associar um nome diferente a cada uma dessas noções. Machado é autor do livro. Mas o Editor é quem inaugura, na Advertência, a ficção de ambos os romances. Constitui o protagonista, Conselheiro Aires, como autor suposto e póstumo das narrativas. Mas apresenta-as, em simultâneo, reformuladas e truncadas de acordo com um critério próprio.

Abstract This text aims to analyze the connections between Esau and Jacob and Counselor Ayres’ Memorial, which are inseparable from those between Machado de Assis, the Editor and Counselor Ayres. In order to understand these ties, it is fundamental to distinguish notions like book, novel and narrative. The book is the object that contains the text. The novel is the fiction that presents the narrative. In both of the novels it is possible to associate a different name to each of these notions. Machado is the book’s author. But it is the Editor who inaugurates the fiction in the Foreword of each of these novels. He establishes the protagonist, Counselor Ayres, as the purported and posthumous author of these narratives. At the same time, however, he introduces them in a reformulated and truncated way at his own discretion.

Resumo Ao longo de sua vida literária, Machado de Assis utilizou muitas e variadas formas para assinar seus textos. Aqui, incluímos um pseudônimo até então desconhecido no conjunto de assinaturas do escritor. Trata-se de um ponto de interrogação ("?"), sinal com o qual subscreveu um texto esquecido nas folhas do Correio da Tarde e ainda inédito, que publicamos ao final do artigo. Tal atribuição será feita a partir de uma autorreferência contida no conhecido texto "O folhetinista", da série "Aquarelas", assinado com a forma "M-as".

Abstract Throughout his literary life, Machado de Assis signed his texts in many different ways. Here we add a hitherto unknown pseudonym to the set of signatures he used. It is a question mark ("?"), which the author used to sign a forgotten text in the pages of Correio da Tarde. We have published this unreported text at the end of this article. This attribution is based on the author's reference to himself in the well-known text "O folhetinista" from the "Aquarelas " series, where "M-as" appears in the byline.
