Wines from high-altitude Cerrado: the development of a new wine-growing frontier in Brasília, DF

Wine is linked to the history of Western civilization and, throughout history, has been expanding to new frontiers. In Brazil, new regions have been developing, whether in traditional viticulture or in tropical viticulture and winter wines. The article analyzes the process of insertion of viticulture in the high-altitude Cerrado, highlighting the integration with the territory and the perspectives in terms of local development. The study is qualitative and exploratory and included primary and secondary data. Bibliographic and documentary research was carried out, as well as interviews with wine grape producers in the region. The results show the presence of a product with a territorial identity, which has already been integrating local elements. The survey shows the availability of several territorial resources that can be valued in terms of heritage, culture, and landscape, and the presence of research to support the new sector. The presence of common elements in other wine territories can be identified in terms of terroir, landscape, and wine tourism. The preliminary results point to a potential for designation of origin, based on in-depth studies and characterization of wines from the high-altitude Cerrado.
