Contributions of strategic planning for the management of a higher education institution

The Institutional Development Plan (IDP) is considered one of the basic instruments of organization and management of a Higher Education Institution (HEI), which aims to establish its mission, philosophy, history, development strategies, organizational structure, form of management, programs, goals, educational guidelines, medium and long-term plans and academic activities. Thus, this study analyses an IDP and the contributions of strategic planning (SP) for the management of a HEI. To this end, two questions were established to guide its production: a) how does a HEI's IDP characterize itself and what relations can be established with the PE? and b) what methodologies are used in the construction of the HEI's IDP? It was produced by means of bibliographic research and analysis of documents from a HEI, taking the form of a case study involved by an exploratory and descriptive research with a qualitative approach. In its constitution, it presents the methodological path, the importance of the EP in the IDP, methodologies for building the IDP and the EP, contributions of the EP in the IDP and in the management of an HEI, and final considerations. The results indicate that the IDP consists of a document organized from the EP that portrays the identity of the HEI: its work philosophy, mission, strategies for achieving goals and objectives, organizational structure and guidelines.
