ANTECIPATION, COMPLEX TV AND THE PATERNAL MELODRAMA IN THIS IS USThis article features new shifts in melodramatic cultural matrix analyzing the TV series This is us (2016 - ). By focusing on this show, we argue how traditions of maternal melodrama are reclaim into what can be defined as paternal melodrama. Paternal melodrama creates images of masculinity that capture notions of care and sensitivity in order to restitute family values. We also argue that this successful series innovates in storytelling by intensifying temporal control strategies in a nonlinear narrative, which, ultimately, reconfigures another fundamental melodramatic aesthetic strategy: anticipation.
