A controvérsia sobre a natureza da eletricidade, surgida em meados do século XVIII entre Jean Antoine Nollet e os seguidores de Benjamin Franklin, é utilizada para investigar até que ponto a fé católica e a protestante desempenharam um papel, quanto ao discurso, no âmbito da filosofia natural. O católico Nollet e o protestante Franklin compartilharam vários atributos em comum, porém o prazer do debate intelectual não era um deles.

The controversy over the nature of electricity, conducted in the middle of the eighteenth century by Jean Antoine Nollet and supporters of Benjamin Franklin, is used to investigate the extent to which Catholic and Protestant faith played a role in discourse in the realm of natural philosophy. Catholic Nollet and Protestant Franklin shared a number of attributes, but the delight in controversy was not one of them.

O artigo busca lançar algumas luzes sobre a construção do laboratório de Manguinhos, recontando um de seus episódios precursores: a viagem a Santos empreendida em 1899 por Oswaldo Cruz, um jovem médico às vésperas de tornar-se herói nacional enquanto símbolo brasileiro da ciência. Destinada a confirmar a chegada pela primeira vez da famigerada peste bubônica em terras brasileiras, a viagem constituiria um marco na justificação da construção de uma fábrica de soro antipestoso no Rio de Janeiro, o futuro Instituto Soroterápico Federal, inaugurado em 1900 e no qual viria a ser instalado o embrião do laboratório de Manguinhos. A partir de quatro narrativas distintas, é possível verificar o processo de ‘criação do mundo’ através do qual cada uma delas realiza sua própria expansão do que seria aparentemente uma ‘mesma’ viagem, permitindo assim configurar a historicidade desses relatos.

The article intends to shed some light on the creation of the Manguinhos laboratory by recounting an episode which predates it: the journey to Santos taken in 1899 by Oswaldo Cruz, a young physician about to become a national hero and the Brazilian symbol of science. Destined to confirm the arrival of the infamous bubonic plague in Brazil for the first time, this journey was a milestone in justifying construction of a factory to produce anti-plague serum in Rio de Janeiro - the future Instituto Soroterápico Federal, inaugurated in 1900 and later embryo of the Manguinhos laboratory. Four different narratives of this journey reveal different processes of ‘creating the world’, each arriving at its own interpretation of the same journey.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo recuperar o processo de gênese e constituição da educação alimentar, através da análise da literatura especializada sobre alimentação, referente aos anos de 1934 a 1946, privilegiando a relação entre o biológico e o social. No entanto, para que esta datação se tornasse inteligível, foi acrescido outro procedimento da duração: a periodização. Assim, o período de 1934 a 1939 se caracterizou pela configuração das bases científicas da alimentação racional, enquanto o período de 1940 a 1946 foi caracterizado por um processo de reordenamento do conhecimento anteriormente produzido, na perspectiva da síntese e definição dos marcos conceituais e disciplinares da ciência da nutrição, resultando na definição de duas formas disciplinares para a educação alimentar: higiene e educação alimentar, que sinalizou maior preocupação com o conteúdo, e educação alimentar, centrada nos instrumentos pedagógicos, configurando a especificidade desse campo.

Underscoring the relationship between the biological and the social, this analysis of the literature on alimentation dating from 1934-46 investigates the process through which alimentary education was born and developed. The period can be divided into two segments: from 1934 to 1939, the scientific foundations of rational alimentation were laid, while 1940-46 brought the re-ordering of knowledge produced earlier. During the latter period, the conceptual and disciplinary reference points of the science of nutrition were synthesized and defined. The result was the creation of two areas within alimentary education: hygiene and alimentary education, where greater concern was placed on content, and nutritional education, which took shape as a field in itself, focused on teaching instruments.

Este trabalho visa refletir sobre os usos dos relatos de vida na pesquisa histórica. Com ênfase em um tipo de produção historiográfica voltada para as questões culturais, e, nesse sentido, mais subjetivas, articula uma experiência de pesquisa que vem se desenvolvendo em relação a grupos sociais do Norte do Brasil, cujos padrões sócio-culturais divergem bastante daqueles usualmente encontrados entre as populações urbanas do Centro-Sul do país - e aos quais costumamos, equivocadamente, atribuir dimensões totalizantes -, a todo um campo recente de discussões sobre usos e maneiras de utilizar a história oral na pesquisa histórica. O foco central da reflexão busca compreender as relações que se estabelecem entre as memórias individuais e as nuanças presentes na noção de cultura popular.

Abstract in English:

In this reflection on the use of life histories in historical research, the focus is on historiographic work concerned with cultural (and therefore more subjective) questions. An oral history research project is being conducted among social groups in North Brazil whose socio-cultural standards differ greatly from those usually observed among urban populations in central-southern Brazil - and whose singularities are often lost to the eye of the outside observer. This article shows how this research experience has a bearing on a range of recent discussions about how oral history is and can be used in historical research. The central concern here is to understand the relationships between individual memories and the nuances found in the notion of popular culture.

Este artigo recupera o discurso veiculado pela imprensa escrita, em jornais de grande circulação do Rio de Janeiro e de São Paulo, sobre a acupuntura e o processo de sua legitimação, institucionalização e legalização no Brasil. Traz uma análise sociológica do tema, em três conjunturas: a primeira delas é a da década de 1970; a segunda, da década de 1980, e a terceira situa-se na primeira metade da década de 1990.

Based on articles from major newspapers in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the text examines the written press’s discourse on acupuncture and the process of its legitimization, institutionalization, and legalization in Brazil. The topic is analyzed from a sociological perspective, focusing on three different periods: the 1970s, the 1980s, and the first half of the 1990s.

O artigo trata da temática da cidade real-cidade imaginária. Argumenta que, ao refletirmos sobre a cidade, refletimos, também, sobre nós mesmos, com todos os nossos sonhos, frustrações, ansiedades e esperanças. A discussão parte de uma ciência reencantada, que aproxima as questões do cotidiano, da memória, do símbolo e do mito.

Exploring the topic ‘actual city/imagined city’, the article argues that when we reflect on the question of city, we are also reflecting upon ourselves - including all our dreams, frustrations, anxieties, and hopes. This discussion is made possible by a science that interrelates the issues of daily life, of memory, of symbol and of myth.
