Pyrene Storage Time Reduces Dormancy and Physiological Quality in Butia Capitata (Arecaceae) Seeds Santos Junior, Marco Aurelio Silva, Renan Ribeiro Neves, Silma da Conceição Ribeiro, Leonardo Monteiro Lopes, Paulo Sergio Nascimento

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the physiological changes in pindo palm (Butia capitata) seeds, a native fruit species of the Brazilian Cerrado, over time under different storage conditions. Pyrenes (endocarp+seed) were stored on the sand under shade and refrigeration conditions. The physiological quality of seeds and embryos (via in vitro culture) was evaluated over time. Moisture content decreased during storage until stabilization, while germination, germination speed index (GSI), and operculum resistance remained stable up to 90 days, with a significant decline at 120 and 150 days. Conversely, lipid peroxidation, measured by malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and electrical conductivity (EC) increased over time, especially after 90 days. Refrigeration promoted greater embryo elongation, but sheath and root emergence were reduced. Storage reduces seed dormancy in B. capitata but also decreases viability and vigor.

Use of Nucleation Technique in the Recovery of Degraded Insular Environment in Rio de Janeiro Cárcamo, Anna Thereza Sartori, Richieri Antonio Dumas, Carlos Andrade, Maura Bovini, Massimo G.

Abstract The study evaluated the use of the nucleation method to plant native species on the Cagarras Islands (RJ), affected by invasive grasses such as crabgrass. Four native species (two pioneers and two late-successional species) were tested together with Muellera virgilioides (Vogel) M.J.Silva & A.M.G.Azevedo, which had been previously planted. After 18 months of monitoring, Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi was the most resistant species, with the highest survival and growth rates. Monteverdia obtusifolia Mart. (Biral) and Allopyllus puberullus (Cambess.) Radlk., on the other hand, showed poor performance. The study concludes that the method is viable, but in demanding environments it is better to use species with more vigorous growth to ensure restoration success.
