This special section examines diversity as a constitutive dimension of societies and educational policies, understood as the result of historical and political processes shaped by power relations and inequality. It discusses conceptual and ideological disputes surrounding the notion of diversity, emphasizing the distinction between market-oriented approaches and the emancipatory conception of diversity advanced by social movements. The argument developed here is that the implementation of educational policies committed to equity requires the articulation between recognition and redistribution, as well as confronting neoliberal and neoconservative trends that attempt to neutralize the political meaning of diversity struggles.
