Open-access First Wave: feminism and female participation in the Curitiba press (1853-1953)

The first feminist wave in Curitiba emerged during the First Republic and gained space in the city’s public sphere, sparking strong debates and highlighting the contradictions of a society that claimed to be modern and liberal, but was still based on provincial machismo. In this context, this article aims to discuss the relationship between the press and feminism in the first half of the 20th century in Curitiba through an investigation of the state of the art. The results achieved indicate that the fact that some women broke the barriers of invisibility did not prevent them from being relegated to a supporting role.
