Open-access Zoneamento Ecológico-Econômico: panorama e interface com o planejamento e as políticas públicas

Environmental zoning is an instrument of Brazil’s 1981 National Environmental Policy that aims to harmonize environmental, social and economic conflicts associated with development and, over the years, has being implemented as Ecological-Economic Zoning (EEZ). The article aims to analyze the EEZ panorama in the country as an instrument for planning and supporting public policies. To this end, is based on a bibliographic and documentary review and interviews with representatives of agencies responsible for the EEZ. The results indicate: only 28 of the 79 EEZ experiences approved by legal standard, by which the role of the EEZ for planning and guidelines for public policies and private activities are defined; and challenges to implement the role of the EEZ for planning and its guidelines, demonstrating that the EEZ has not constituted a relevant purpose and of interest to public managers to support planning and public policies.
