Open-access Olhares e perspectivas sobre educação e imigração em Portugal: do Ensino Básico ao Ensino Superior

In recent years Portugal has asserted its status as a country of immigration, which is reflected in the education system, through the increase in foreign students in basic, secondary and higher education, and in the policies and strategies implemented. This reality poses opportunities and challenges in terms of adaptation and school success. There are inequalities among immigrant students, with disadvantaged foreigners having lower success rates, more failures, risk of dropping out of school, short career pathways in secondary education and not pursuing higher education. To bridge discrepancies in school performance between indigenous and immigrant children and young people, measures were introduced to promote equality and integration and increased programs to attract international students to higher education and the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and diplomas.
