Open-access Approaches to the History of Criminal Factions in Rio de Janeiro in Scientific Literature: A Scoping Review

Abstract

This scope review sought to answer the question: how are the history, trajectories, and developments of criminal factions in the state of Rio de Janeiro described in scientific literature? It was found that the history of these factions was not the main focus of studies, but rather addressed in a sporadic manner. Based on the different ways of conceptualizing them and addressing their history, it is concluded that criminal factions are a phenomenon that emerged and is maintained by the actions of the state and the policies it claims to apply to combat such groups.
