Politics of memory, truth, and transitional justice: Analysis of the Brazilian experience

Abstract

This study seeks to identify the possible reasons for the failure of transitional justice policies in Brazil to build a collective consciousness regarding the atrocities committed during the Civil-Military Dictatorship of 1964, leading to the rise of ultraconservatism in the country and the threat of an imminent democratic rupture. With a bibliographic review, we explored the main legacies of this exceptional period that hindered the progress of transitional justice in Brazil and resulted in the ascendance of ultraconservatism in the country, with common evidence of the preservation of interests of groups linked to the Civil-Military Dictatorship.
