Open-access Quality indicators for school mobilization

Abstract

This article describes and analyzes a school quality indicators system developed in Brazil by an NGO (Ação Educativa) and two International Organizations (the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund Unicef - and the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP) with the support of various governmental and non-governmental organizations all over the country. The main goal of these indicators is to involve the community in the struggle to improve school quality. The political background of the initiative, the elaboration process and the system and the system principles and characteristics are described. Finally, the main issues drawn from the first experimental use of the system in 14 elementary education schools and the expectations involving the project are discussed.
