Original Article Hearing assessment of infants with congenital syphilis Panassol, Pâmela da Silva Friedrich, Luciana Rosito, Leticia Petersen Schmidt Berticelli, Amanda Zanatta Corso, Andréa Lucia Resumo em Inglês: ABSTRACT Purpose To evaluate the presence of hearing loss in the first months of life in infants treated for congenital syphilis at birth. Methods Prospective study including all neonates born in a University public hospital in South Brazil, who needed treatment for congenital syphilis after birth in the Neonatal Unit, between 2021 and 2022. Otorhinolaryngologic and audiologic evaluations were performed at a mean age of 3.3 months, concomitantly with the first post-discharge appointment in the congenital syphilis outpatient clinic, through frequency-specific auditory brainstem response. Results Sixty-five patients were included in the study. All subjects underwent Neonatal Hearing Screening before being discharged from the hospital, consisting of transient evoked otoacoustic emission and automated auditory brainstem response tests. Sixty-one patients (93.8%) passed both screening tests and four (6.2%) failed both tests. Concerning the 4 newborns who failed, 2 returned for retesting and had normal results, 1 patient did not show up for retesting, and 1 patient failed both retests. Follow-up was concluded by 23 infants (35.4% of the initial sample) who underwent Frequency-Specific Auditory Brainstem Response testing. The other patients did not attend to the appointments. Regarding the 23 patients that concluded the follow-up, no interaural response asymmetries suggestive of retrocochlear involvement were observed. Additionally, no changes were found in the absolute latencies of waves I, III, and V, or in the interpeak intervals I–III, III–V, and I–V. The Frequency-Specific Auditory Brainstem Response evaluation did not present any abnormalities in the electrophysiological thresholds at the tested frequencies. Conclusion No signs of hearing loss were found in patients treated for congenital syphilis during neonatal period, either in the Neonatal Hearing Screening or in the Frequency-Specific Auditory Brainstem Response during follow-up. |

Original Article Evaluation of the Context-Based Prospective Memory (CBPM) task in neurotypical middle-aged and older adults: psychometric properties and sensitivity to age-related cognitive changes Vikram, Siri Ashley, Sharon Bajaj, Gagan D’Souza, Dasmine Fraclita Resumo em Inglês: ABSTRACT Purpose Prospective Memory (PM) is the ability to remember intentions for future execution which plays an important role in communication and is vulnerable to age-related decline. Context-Based Prospective Memory (CBPM) task, a novel test in Indian scenario evaluated psychometric properties among young adults. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of CBPM task among the neurotypical middle-aged and older adults and to investigate its sensitivity to age-related changes. Methods A total of 80 participants (40 middle-aged, 40 older adults) completed the CBPM task and the Memory for Intentions Screening Test (MIST). Psychometric properties like internal consistency, test-retest reliability and convergent validity were evaluated. Age-related differences were examined using previously established CBPM task data from young adults. Results CBPM task demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s α= 0.875 for middle-aged and 0.715 for older adults), Excellent test-retest reliability for total performance scores (ICC=0.93 and 0.81) for middle-aged and older adults respectively and error classification (ICC= 0.97 and 0.99). Similarly inter-rater reliability also indicated strong reliability for the total PM performance (ICC=0.91 and 0.85), and error classification (ICC=0.97 and 0.99). Significant convergent validity was also observed with MIST, suggesting that both the tasks perform similarly. On assessing the tool’s sensitivity to age-related changes in PM abilities, significant declines were observed in middle-aged and older adults compared to young adults affirming the age-related cognitive deterioration. Conclusion The CBPM task is an effective and reliable tool to measure PM across age groups, demonstrating strong psychometric properties and sensitivity to identify the age-related decline. |

Resumo em Inglês: ABSTRACT Purpose To investigate the reliability between direct and indirect measurements in facial anthropometry. Methods The sample consisted of 60 subjects aged between 16 and 48 years. After applying the eligibility criteria, indirect objective anthropometric facial examinations (SAPO® and IMAGEJ® software) and direct frontal anthropometric examinations were performed using a digital caliper at the anthropometric points: glabella, sub nasale, gnathion, alar, exocanthus, and chilling, with the patients seated in a comfortable position and head in a natural position. Two trained and calibrated examiners performed the measurements three times to obtain the arithmetic mean. The participants were photographed to perform the indirect measurements. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics (measures of absolute and relative frequency and summary measures of central tendency and dispersion) and inferential statistics (Chi-square test, Bland-Altman, paired t-test, and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient), considering a significance of 5%. Results There was intra- and inter-observer agreement, sexual dimorphism (female measurements smaller), higher values of direct anthropometry when compared with photoanthropometry, and differences between the software used and the caliper with ImageJ®. Conclusion There was a divergence between direct and indirect anthropometries, which do not represent the same values and proportions, depending on the anthropometric point used, and the professional should consider this aspect. Facial anthropometric comparisons should be carried out using the same software in order to avoid divergences in analyses. |

Case Report Post-masking in cortical auditory evoked potentials following acoustically controlled auditory training: a case report Gonçalves, Matheus Costa Menezes, Pedro de Lemos Batista, Carlos Henrique Alves Ferreira, Danielle Cavalcante Andrade, Kelly Cristina Lira de Resumo em Inglês: ABSTRACT Central auditory processing refers to the individual's ability to process auditory information within the central auditory nervous system and involves a set of auditory skills. Deficits in one or more of these skills characterize central auditory processing disorder. Given the presence of this disorder, auditory training is indicated as a set of strategies designed to activate the auditory system and improve the processing of acoustic signals. Electrophysiological measures such as cortical auditory evoked potential may serve as a valuable supplement to the behavioral assessment of auditory processing. When associated with noise, temporal masking is assessed. It is characterized as an alteration in the perception of a sound in the presence of another auditory stimulus. Individuals with this disorder are more susceptible to post-masking effects due to difficulties in understanding speech in noisy environments. This study reports the case of a 25-year-old adult diagnosed with central auditory processing disorder who underwent cortical auditory evoked potentials using speech stimulus preceded by noise. The acoustically controlled auditory training was conducted over 10 sessions, using the “Afinando o Cérebro” platform. Following intervention, improvements were observed in the participant's auditory skills, along with reductions in the latencies of the P1, N1 and P2 waves and in the N1-P1 and N1-P2 peak-to-peak amplitudes. These findings highlight the effects of acoustically controlled auditory training and contribute to a better understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms involved in speech perception in noise among individuals with central auditory processing disorder. |

Resumo em Inglês: ABSTRACT This study describes the experience of forming a choir with patients who have undergone total laryngectomy. The choir began its activities in 2019 and is composed of total laryngectomy patients who are currently undergoing or have previously undergone therapy at the service and, therefore, have heterogeneous esophageal voice (EV) production. Thus, patients are subdivided into four groups, according to their level of EV acquisition: Group 1 – fluent in oral communication with EV and users of electrolarynx (perform chorus and solos); Group 2 – produce words with EV (perform final sections of verses); Group 3 – patients who produce syllables and vowels with EV (mark the rhythm with sequential syllable emission); Group 4 – produce no sound with EV (perform body percussion effects). All actively participate in selecting the repertoire. The choir also includes laryngeal voices (university students and speech-language-hearing pathologists). Rehearsals take place weekly, as do the therapy sessions. Musical arrangements must be adapted so that all patients can effectively participate in the group's overall sound. This activity fosters greater interaction among participants, strengthening emotional bonds, providing socialization, and sharing experiences beyond rehabilitation. The musical repertoire is carefully selected, considering the length of the verses, the tempo of the songs, the sustain of notes, and the melodic line. |

Systematic Review Behavioral and electrophysiological findings of central auditory processing in children and adolescents undergoing musical training Gindri, Bruna de Franceschi Schirmer Wagner, Tainara Milbradt Weich Frizzo, Ana Cláudia Figueiredo Biaggio, Eliara Pinto Vieira Resumo em Inglês: ABSTRACT Purpose This study analyzes the outcomes of behavioral and electrophysiological assessments of central auditory processing in children and adolescents undergoing musical training through clinical protocols or structured educational methods. Research strategies A systematic search was conducted in three electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) between April and June 2024. Two researchers independently applied the following search terms combined with the Boolean operator "AND": "musical training," "child," and "adolescent." Selection criteria The PICOS framework guided the selection process, focusing on population (children and adolescents), intervention (musical training), comparison (with non-trained groups), outcome (central auditory processing effects), and study design (cohort, case-control, and randomized clinical trials). Data analysis Data were extracted and tabulated by the researchers and analyzed descriptively. Methodological quality was assessed using the NHLBI Quality Assessment Tool. Results Among 800 initial publications, five duplicates were removed. Of the remaining 795 studies, 783 did not meet the inclusion criteria. A full-text review of 12 studies led to the exclusion of one due to unavailability and four due to quality issues. Ultimately, seven articles were included. Conclusion The results highlight improvements in sound discrimination, speech-in-noise processing, environmental sound change detection, and selective attention. These findings underscore the necessity of avoiding overly brief training programs. |
