This article examines the contradictions between recent educational policies implemented by the state of São Paulo and the living conditions of working-class youth enrolled in evening high school. Based on field research conducted in two public schools in the city of Campinas (SP), the study compares the students profiles with the policies implemented by the State Departament of Education (SEDUC/SP), problematizing the effects of class closures and the precarius provision of evening education. The findings indicate that although most young people express a desire to continue their studies, there is a lack of information about access to public higher education and significant structural difficulties in reconciling work and schooling and sense of abandoment by public authoritie, which produces feelings of powerlessness and marginalization. The study thus highlights the tensions between educational policy, youth conditions, and the guarantee of the right to education in the contemporary Brazilian context.
