SUMMARY

A preliminary trial with the castor bean variety IAC-38 was conducted at Campinas, State of Sao Paulo, to evaluate.the losses of seeds by shattering of the capsules. In comparison with the control treatment, whose mature spikes were harvested weekly, in those with 4-, 6-, and 8-week intervals the losses corresponded to 6, 12 and 24 per cent, respectively. During the fruiting period the plots of the latter treatments were harvested, 6, 4, and 3 times, respectively.
