SUMMARY
The spittlebugs Deois flavopicta (Stal, 1854) and Deois schach (Fabricius 1787) (Hemiptera, Cercopidae) have become severe pests of grasslands in Brazil. The pastures of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf are very susceptible to these insects. High populations develop during the humid and warm period of the year in these pastures. The authors observed severe damage in a rice field located near a grassland of B. decumbens, in the region of Pindamonhangaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil, done by the adults of these spittlebug species, which had flown from the infested pastures. The adults were toxicogenic to the rice plants and killed them. Farmers of this region are advised to be prepared to control spittlebug adults when their rice or corn fields are near pastures of B. decumbens.
