Kátia Tônkyre, the warrior who forged herself in the fight

This photo essay presents the life and leadership trajectory of Kátia Tônkyre (Kátia Silene Valdenilson), the first female chief of the Akrãtikatêjê village, located in the Mãe Maria Indigenous Reserve (RIMM), in southeastern Pará. The purpose is to visually present her trajectory as a leader, mother, grandmother and defender of the rights of her people. By documenting key moments in her struggle for the land, culture and rights of the Akrãtikatêjê People and the Peoples of the Mãe Maria Indigenous Reserve, the image is conceived as a record of her life story and trajectory, a visual document that challenges the historical invisibility of Indigenous women leaders in contemporary Brazil, reflecting the strength and resilience of Kátia Tônkyre.
