Open-access State, society and higher education during the Empire days in Brasil: the past present

Abstract

This text analyses the relations between State, Society and Higher Education during the Empire days in Brazil. It points out how much the slave system and the constitution of an oligarchic state contributed to making unfeasible the creation of universities in the country, limiting Higher Education to vocational programs, whose characteristics have withstood changes which occurred in the country, reached the XXth century, with its marks persisting until today.
