Open-access Narrative and Literality in Contemporary Painting

The article explores the overlap between pictorial models of narrative and literality in contemporary painting, taking three artists as an example: Kerry James Marshall, Luc Tuymans and Mamma Andersson. The work of the three, which began to gain prominence between the 1980s and 1990s, summons these two instances - and, often, their historical baggage - simultaneously, working them as distinct signs within the same framework.
