A British abolitionist mission in Brazil and the relationship between the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society and the Sociedade contra o Tráfico de Africanos e Promotora da Colonização e Civilização dos Indígenas

In 1852, a Quaker mission visited Brazil to deliver to the Emperor a Memorial against the slavery and the slave trade, prepared by the Religious Society of Friends of Great Britain and Ireland. This mission favored the contact between the newly created Sociedade contra o Tráfico de Africanos e Promotora da Colonização e Civilização Indígena (SCT) and the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society (BFASS). The article explores how the nascent Brazilian antislavery took advantage of the prestigious British institution, but at the same time maintained its autonomy.
