Twenty two Mexican inbred lines plus the cultivars IAC- 18, Alondra-S-46 and Anahuac were evaluated in field experiments carried out at different locations of the State of Säo Paulo under sprinkler irrigation and at the Paranapanema Valley in upland condition. Grain yield, plant height, number of days from emergence to flowering and from emergence to maturation, percentage of layed plants, head length, number of grain per spike and per spikelet, number of spikelets, weight of 100 grains , and resistance to stem and leaf rusts, leaf spots and mildew were evaluated under field conditions and tests of resistance to stem and leaf rusts and to aluminum were also made, respectively, in greenhouse and in laboratory. Considering the trials planted under sprinkler irrigation the lines IAC-204 and IAC-246 showed good performance regarding grain yield Line IAC-248 exhibited the best productivity in the trials planted in Paranapanema Valley. Lines IAC-248, IAC-246 and IAC-204 showed the highest grain yield considering all experiments. Line Dove' 'S" - TSI (T-2), Maya' 'S" - MON' 'S' ' (T-3, VFR' 'S" - JUN' 'S ' ' (T-7), [(BB - CN067 x Cl 12703) PHO"S"] JUN"S" (T-9), (H.285.70 - TOB x rrrs - MJ 692/PVN"S") KAL - BB x ALD"S" (T-IO), IAC-246, IAC-206, IAC-207, PEG"S" - PF 70354 (KAL - BB x ALD"S" /MRNG) (T-16), IAS - 63 ALD"S" x GTO/ LV (T-18), TOB ' 'S"/CN067 - JAR x KVZYACO' 'S" (T-20) and Maya - MON' 'S" (T-21) as well as the cultivars Alondra-S-46 and Anahuac showed resistance to two race mixtures of stem rust under greenhouse condition. These genetypes were also resistant to this disease in the field. Lines Dove' 'S" - TSI (T-2) and IAC-207 were resistant to three race mistures of leaf rust under greenhouse condition. Resistance was confirmed under natural infection in the field. Lines (YD' 'S" x KAL - BB) HORK' 'S" - MO (T-4) and Mirlo' 'S ' '- BUC' 'S' ' (T- 12) were the most resistant to mildew considering all studied germplasms. Cultivar IAC-18 and lines N AC - MON' 'S" (T-5) and (H.285.70 - TOB x TTS - MJ 692/ PVN' 'S ' ' (T-10) exhibited tall type plants in comparison with the other genotypes which were of the semidwarf type. Lines NAC - MON" S" (T-5) and IAC-248 presented long heads; IAC-207 , high number of spikelets per spike; [(BB - CN067 x CI 12703) PHO' 'S' JUN' 'S" (T-9), high number of grains per spike; IAC-203 , high number of grains per spikelet and [PJ x CN067 7C (CN067 x BB) VAR PCI"S"] MRNG) ALD"S" x YR - TRF (T-17), high grain weight. Cultivar IAC-18 and lines IAC-203, (YD' 'S" x KAL- BB) HORK"S" -MO (T-4), IAC-246, IAC-248 and ( [PJ x CN067 - (CN067 - INIA x BB) VAR PCI"S"] MRNG) ALD"S" x YR - TRF (T-17) showed high tolerance to aluminum toxicity.
