Open-access Topical fibronectin in the treatment of the corneal alkali ulceration in rabbits.

Bilateral alkali burns of the cornea were produced in 15 albino rabbits using the disc of filter paper, 8,0 mm in diameter that was soaked in 1N NaOH.

The right eyes were treated with a drop of purified fibronectin and the left eyes with a drop of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), 5 times a day.

No difference was found between the group treated with fibronectin and PBS on the 1st, 5th and 11th day after the wound. On the 30th day after the wound 83.33% of fibronectin-treated eyes and 16.67% of PBS-treated eyes were completely healed. This is significant at p = 0.04.
